Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S1E36 Birds of a Feather

Go To

Rita sends down the deadly 40-story-tall Hatchasaurus commanded by Cardiotron. The Dinozord manages to defeat this large bird/dinosaur hybrid but the beast reforms and is more deadly, easily trashing the Megazord. To make matters worse Rita also puts a binding spell on Dragonzord, disabling it. Jason decides to confront Cardiatron by jumping inside the Hatchasaurus. Now possessing the Dragon Coin and by calling for the Dragon Shield and Daggernote , Jason armors up and attempts to break the hold over Tommy's former zord. Bulk and Skull attempt to use Biff to intimidate Kameron at a karate tournament, but the boy learns a valuable lesson in respect and being a good sport.

Tropes

  • Behemoth Battle: Dinozords vs. Hatchasaurus & Cardiatron.
  • Brains and Brawn: The sentient heart Cardiatron providing the intelligence that makes Hatchasaurus function while Hatchy himself is little more than a roaring beast, albeit more powerful than most.
  • Came Back Strong: Downplayed but still observable. Any time Hatchasaurus is rebuilt by Cardiatron, he gets slightly stronger and his features get more dangerous (he grows thorns on his chest after his first resurrection, and then gains horns and dorsal spikes after his second return).
  • Captain Obvious: This line from Trini:
Trini: (seeing the Dragonzord coming to fight Hatchasuarus) Hey, look, it's attacking!
    • Also occurs with this line from Squatt:
Squatt: (seeing Hatchasaurus destroyed) Wowie, did you see that? The Hatchasaurus is a goner! The power rangers blew him into a zillion pieces.
  • Combat Tentacles: Cardiatron primarily fights with these.
  • Death Is Cheap: Thanks to Cardiatron, Hatchasaurus is capable of resurrecting itself any time the Rangers destroy it.
  • Dual Wielding: Jason using both his Power Sword and the Dragon Dagger to slay Cardiatron.
  • Monster of the Week: Hatchasaurus & Cardiatron.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Averted, surprisingly. While Cardiatron's death leaves Hatchasaurus disabled, he still needs to be killed properly by the Ultrazord to end the battle.
  • Once per Episode: Taken up to eleven; the zords are called only 4 1/2 minutes in, and the battle takes up over half the episode.
  • Organic Technology: Cardiatron is a supercomputer that resembles a tentacled heart.
  • Orifice Invasion: After Hatchasaurus' second return, Jason decides to climb out of Megazord and dive right into the monster's mouth in order to try and disable Cardiatron to prevent further resurrections.
  • Red Filter of Doom: The insides of Hatchasaurus where Jason tries to fight Cardiatron are lit in a reddish/orange light.
  • Rotating Protagonist: While the civilian plot focuses on Zack and his junior martial arts student, the Ranger plot focuses on Jason and his learning to use of the Dragonzord powers. note
  • Suddenly Voiced: Cardiatron's counterpart did not speak.
  • Silent Antagonist: Hatchasaurus only roars and snarls like Mighty Minotaur and Spidertron before him. Cardiatron is very much the smarts of the duo.
  • Surprisingly Creepy Moment: Cardiatron is pretty disturbing for kids TV, with him being a tentacled heart gloating that he's going to tear Jason into teensy weensy pieces.
  • Womb Level: Jason going inside Hatchasaurus' body and getting attacked by Cardiatron definitely counts.
  • Worthy Opponent: Cardiatron calls Jason this, but only to express pity that he must destroy him. Jason however has a Heroic Resolve and defeats him.
