Crying Shiguru

Original Airdate: October 18, 2020
Written by: Kaori Kaneko
Directed by: Katsuya Watanabe

Summary:

With a new invisible enemy on the loose, the team turns to the "Holy Land Atamald" to hopefully fix the Mashins. However, the only one who knows how to reach this place is the Kiramai Stone Hakobu, who has shut himself away from the world due to unknown circumstances. To draw him out, Shiguru and Juru head out to the islands where Hakobu is located.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: Shiguru of all people pull this off on Hakobu by simply acting his way through to draw out the right emotions needed for Hakobu's empathy to come forward once again.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Gomoryu is about to unleash its twin cannons, Hakobu leaps in and attacks it.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Juru and Shiguru try to pull off a manzai routine in the hopes of drawing out Hakobu's emotions. It doesn't work.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The lines Shiguru was memorizing in the beginning is used towards Hakobu to draw out the Mashin's emotions.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Mashins are taken out once again... except for the fact that they can't be fixed right away due to Projector Gomoryu's attacks, needing to go to the Holy Land Atamald to restore their luster.
  • The Oner: The fight scene between the remaining Kiramagers and Bechats are done in this way, using just a few cuts and clever cameras tricks to make it seem like a one-take.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is one to the 1998 film Diary of Early Winter Showers (時雨の記/Shigure no Ki).
  • Shout-Out:
    • Hakobu's punishment for Juru and Shiguru — should they fail to rouse his emotions — is to pin both of them beneath his giant form for eternity, which brings to mind Journey to the West, where Buddha trapped the Monkey King under a mountain.
    • Hakobu bites at the Jamen Beast much like Kivat, saying "gabu gabu" when he's chomping at it. Funnily enough, Kivat was voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, who currently voices Oradin.
    • Juru and Shiguru's Boke and Tsukkomi Routine is specifically done in the style of the manzai duo Pekopa, a twist on the formula where the tsukkomi starts to complain about the boke doing something stupid, only to turn around mid-protest and agree with him for a logical reason.
  • Special Edition Title: The ED this time as part of the "Kiramai Music Festival" has Shiguru singing his character song Perfect Blue.
