While Luz and Eda are out hunting, King drags Amity, Lilith and Hooty out to prove his royal lineage.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptation Species Change: While Skara's still a witch, she's also a werewolf in the Luz Clawthorne Saga.
  • Age Lift: It's revealed that King's 12 years older than he was in the show.
  • Bittersweet Ending: On one hand, King has accepted the truth about how Eda found him, he decides to start calling her "mom" like Luz and seems to be starting to get along with Amity. On the other hand, the Glandus students who vandalized the Owl House make it clear they're gonna come back to challenge Luz and with how young the Inner Demon looks already, it's clear Skara's misery is gonna be keeping him like that and her stuck in her wolf form for a little while.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Subverted. Eda's visibly bleeding on her leg from where the werewolf bit her.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Lilith is right to bring up the lack of proof for an actual King of Demons and Belos being the only ruler on the Isles, but King reminds her that Belos was a pathological liar and Amity supports him by reminding Lilith about the EC's unreliable narrative and the cover-ups regarding Luz.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Just before King begins telling his story, Hooty points out the scene changing.
  • Call-Back:
    • Amity brings up Lilith's Condescending Compassion leading to her telling Luz she can't be a witch in "To Serve", which is why she fully supports King's story. She also reminds Lilith about the Emperor's Coven trying to hide Luz's existence from her.
    • Luz brings up learning not to keep secrets for too long after what happened in "Everything's Gone Wrong".
  • Calling the Old Woman Out: Amity spends most of the chapter chewing out Lilith for not giving King the benefit of the doubt about his story. Lilith's continued belief that King's delusional ultimately gets Amity to harshly remind her of when she tried to dissuade Luz from following her dream of being a witch, the main reason for Amity supporting King's story as truthful.
Hooty: Gee, she really got you there, Lulu.
    Lilith: I know.
  • The Cameo:
    • Willow shows up talking to Luz and Amity about Skara's disappearance over the crystal ball.
    • The two Glandus vandals count as this and an Early-Bird Cameo as they appear to foreshadow events to come.
    • Brucy explains to everyone what happened to the Owl House when they get home.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Throughout the chapter, Amity shows signs of invoking this. After everything she learned about Belos and the Emperor's Coven, she's convinced they were involved with King ending up in his current state and his tower being in ruins coming up with several theories to explain it. She stops upon learning the truth.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The events of Pleasure Island are mentioned again. Amity also hears The Voice again, and it saves her, Lilith and Hooty from taking one of Jean-Luc's arrows to the head.
    • The Owl House residents mention their promise to be more honest and not keep secrets from each other from "Family Group Therapy". Before then, Luz and Eda went hunting for hunduns, which they did in the same chapter.
    • Lilith mentions babysitting the Blight siblings, which was seen in the book's prologue.
    • At the end of the chapter, King mentions that Amity's going to read "Beauty and the Beast" (one of the books she got in the human realm in "Human Date") to him.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Just like canon, the chapter focuses on King and his past.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The way Luz and Amity talk concerning King at the beginning brings to mind the idea of parents watching over a kid wanting attention.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Emily Tricks and Stella Northstar make their debuts as the two girls from Glandus High who vandalize the Owl House.
  • Expressive Hair: One of the vandals is said to have moving pigtails.
  • Failed a Spot Check: No one catches Lilith's uneasy expression when Eda promises King none of them will be keeping secrets from each other anymore.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Luz and Eda find claw marks too big and deep to match any of the predators that live in the area they're in. Cue the werewolf jumping out of the bushes a few seconds later.
  • Foreshadowing: The Glandus students hint that they plan on meeting Luz very soon.
  • Gemstone Assault: Eda uses a potion that sprouts crystal spikes at the werewolf; this is what drives it off.
  • The Ghost: Willow mentions Amelia, Cat, Bo and Skara's parents during her call with Luz and Amity, and ends the call to take one from Gus.
  • Here We Go Again!: Hooty rolls his eyes in annoyance at having to hear King's supposed origin story again.
  • In Spite of a Nail: King still comes to terms with his origins, vows to find his father and gets the others to bring Jean-Luc home (with support from Hooty.) Luz also promises to glue King's broken horn back on.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • The residents of the Owl House, Willow, Bo, Amelia and Cat have been told of Skara's disappearance.
    • Amity, Lilith and Hooty are informed of King's true origins.
    • The twins told Amity about Lilith babysitting them and Odalia using that to increase Amity's chances of getting into the Emperor's Coven.
    • Lilith learns about Luz getting into fights with students from other schools.
    • Skara faces the Inner Demon for the first time.
  • Light Is Not Good: In her werewolf state (which has white fur), Skara is extremely hostile towards everything in her sight.
  • Noodle Incident: King once ate dust bunnies, resulting in an unpleasant trip to Dr. Bride.
  • No-Sell: Eda gets bitten by werewolf Skara but since she's already cursed, Eda won't become a werewolf herself.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Eda is known for not remembering people's names. She actually gets Skara's right when she brings her up, showing how worried she is for her.
  • Out of Focus: Willow only has a cameo appearance while Gus is just mentioned.
  • Point of Divergence: In regards to "Echoes of the Past": Amity joins King, Lilith and Hooty on the trip to the uncharted island in place of Luz, who goes hunting with Eda and encounters a werewolf (later revealed to be Skara). After learning where the others went, Luz carried Eda to the island (omitting the flying bathtub) and the Owl House is vandalized by Glandus students since no one's around. King admits he's known about how he and Eda really met for years and instead of a fire bomb, the hole in the tower is unblocked by Luz using a drill spin with her wings. Plus unlike canon, Willow makes an appearance.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Skara's wolf form has piercing red eyes.
  • The Reveal:
    • Eda found King 6 years before she found Luz, making him 20 in this continuity. King also overheard Eda tell Luz the truth about his origins when the human was 7.
    • Slasher is cursed with lycanthropy and Skara not only inherited it, but has fully undergone her first transformation. It's also revealed that the Brookes' basement is full of cages and chains meant to contain Slasher should he transform.
  • Secret-Keeper: Per Eda's instructions, Luz promised to never inform King that she knows how her mother really found him.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: But as it turns out, not only has Luz been hiding that she knew King's origins per Eda's request for 7 years, King knew all along.
  • Shout-Out: This chapter's Song Parody is of "I Just Can't Wait to Be King".
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The scene of Luz fighting the werewolf appeared in the Book 2 teaser.
  • Trash the Set: Once everyone comes home, they find the Owl House covered in graffiti with the words "Owl Trash" sprayed on the front door, broken windows, harpoons lodged in the tower and the yard covered in spikes.
  • Wham Episode: As per canon King's origins are revealed as is his age. Two female students from Glandus High attack the Owl House to send a message to Luz; meanwhile, Skara has fully transformed into a werewolf for the first time (which is what her father's Dark Secret is) and the Inner Demon is feeding on her misery since she's stuck in her mind while her body is on the loose.
  • Wham Line: King admits to Luz that he's known the truth about how Eda found him ever since she told Luz and he overheard them 7 years ago.
  • White Wolves Are Special: The werewolf has white fur and sure enough, it's later revealed to be Skara.
