Recap / Lucifer (2016) S01E09 "A Priest Walks into a Bar"

Go To

"Hah! A priest walks into a bar? I've heard this one before. Never seen it, though!"

A priest wanders into Lux looking for a favor. Lucifer, not in any way inclined to help, happily turns him down, but he's happy to investigate the priest on his own! Chloe has no patience for Lucifer's Daddy Issues, and has him look after Frank. Despite Lucifer's trolling, he and Frank actually get along quite well, and end up Duet Bonding. Unfortunately, Father Frank is shot dead while trying to redeem his young charge.

Lucifer freaks.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Artistic License – Music: Father Frank and Lucifer switching places on the piano in the middle of their duet is a very cool shot, but there's just a little bit too much time where the music still has four hands playing while Lucifer is still moving spots.
  • Alliterative Name: Father Frank.
  • Big "WHY?!": Lucifer screams this to the Spider when he shot Father Frank.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Eric Doyle, a.k.a. The Spider, poses as a sweet youth counselor. He's really not.
  • Blackmail:
    • Malcolm blackmails Dan by pointing out that he'll go down with Malcolm as a result of turning a blind eye to his previous actions.
    • Amenadiel also does this to Malcolm, using the fact that he was sentenced to Hell and brought back to life as leverage.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Frank after being shot.
  • Cain and Abel: Amenadiel charges Malcolm with killing Lucifer.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Lucifer's teary-eyed rant towards God in the end.
Lucifer: You... you cruel, manipulative bastard. Is this all part of your plan? It's all just a game to you, isn't it? Eh? Well, I know punishment, and he did not deserve that. He followed your stupid rules and it still wasn't good enough! So what does it take to please you? Break your rules, and you fall. Follow them, and you still lose! Doesn't matter whether you're a sinner! Doesn't matter whether you're a saint! Nobody can win, so what's the point? What's the bloody point?
  • Cool Old Guy: Father Frank, who doesn't mind Lucifer's attempts to Troll him and proves a mean piano player, playing a duet with him.
  • Confessional: Lucifer follows an attractive woman into a confession booth (and poses as a priest while he's at it).
Lucifer: For your penance, ten bloody Marys and a good shag.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Father Frank has a criminal record.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: Malcolm devours a donut while making it clear that he's blackmailing Dan.
  • Duet Bonding: Lucifer and Father Frank. Chloe thinks it's adorable, and later on, she comforts Lucifer by playing "Heart and Soul" with him.
  • Everybody Knew Already: As Father Frank is dying, he reveals to Lucifer that he knew he really was the Devil all along.
  • Fat Bastard: The Spider, who uses his charges to deal drugs and shoots Father Frank.
  • Freak Out: Lucifer absolutely loses his shit at Frank's death, and nearly gives the Spider a Karmic Death as a result.
  • Good Shepherd: What Father Frank turns out to be; he's genuinely protective of Connor, he's completely immune to Lucifer's trolling, he talks Connor down from crossing the Moral Event Horizon, pulls a Heroic Sacrifice to save him, and as he's dying, reveals that he recognised Lucifer - who he made friends with - for who and what he was from the start, and continues to encourage him to have faith that maybe God's plan for him isn't over yet. Hell, he's good enough that Lucifer is a) certain he'll go to Heaven, b) goes on a screaming, tearful rant at God after his death, stating that Frank followed every rule and did everything right, that he was a saint, and still died.
  • Hates Being Alone: Lucifer. However, there's a difference between being alone and being lonely, as he finds out.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Frank encourages Connor to turn his life around, and Chloe says there's still hope for him.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Frank steps in front of Connor when The Spider is about to shoot him.
  • Hidden Depths: Father Frank believes Lucifer's father was responsible for introducing them, and actually believes that Lucifer is the Devil, something he reveals as he's dying.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Lucifer's reaction to Frank getting shot.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Eric Doyle's pathetic attempt at wanting Father Frank dead because he was "bringing too much heat".
  • Ignore the Fanservice: Lucifer trolls Frank by setting up a nun-themed striptease act for him. Frank is not only entirely unflustered by the half-naked dancing women, he's quietly enjoying the music they're dancing to.
  • Lonely Piano Piece: After Frank dies, Lucifer goes home and sadly plays "Knocking on Heaven's Door" on his piano. Chloe then turns up, revealing that she's not there for a case, she's there for him, and joins him on the piano.
  • Manly Tears: After the initial Freak Out and rage, this is Lucifer's reaction to Frank's death.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In-Universe, Father Frank dissuades Connor from crossing this.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: Father Frank proves to be this to Lucifer of all people, with Chloe talking him down from delivering a Karmic Death to Frank's murderer by saying that Frank wouldn't want that.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Conner has it all spelled on his face after his actions led to Father Frank's death.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Lucifer gives the pizza guy a massive tip, and encourages him to join the party he's throwing.
  • Odd Friendship: Lucifer and Frank strike one up after Frank proves a) immune to Lucifer's trolling, b) genuinely a good priest despite all Lucifer's attempts to prove otherwise, c) an excellent piano player, resulting in a moment of Duet Bonding.
  • Papa Wolf: Frank leaps in front of Conner and takes the bullet meant for him.
  • Pedophile Priest: Lucifer initially accuses Father Frank of being this, several times. Frank is, as with all of Lucifer's antics, entirely unfazed.
  • Pizza Boy Special Delivery: Lucifer asks the pizza delivery guy if his deliveries ever end in sex, like the internet says.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Lucifer has one after the events of the episode.
  • Saintly Church: Father Frank represents this. Which makes it more devastating when he gets killed.
  • Sinister Minister: Lucifer thinks Father Frank is this (and wants him to be this), but it's not the case. Quite the opposite, as it turns out.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Lucifer comes close to killing the Spider after the latter kills Father Frank.
  • Villainous Glutton: Malcolm is constantly eating.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Gender-inverted. It turns out Dan shot Malcolm and the gangsters because the former had spotted Chloe and was about to shoot her.
  • You Have Failed Me: Eric Doyle tried to shoot Connor because he wouldn't shoot Father Frank.
