Recap / Love Live Sunshine Ep 1 I Want To Shine

Go To

Chika Takami, a student of Uranohoshi High School in Uchiura, decides to become a school idol after witnessing a μ's performance while on a trip to Tokyo.

At the start of her second school year, Chika with the help of Childhood Friend You Watanabe, tries to recruit students to form a school idol club. Chika tries to scout the first years Hanamaru Kunikida and Ruby Kurosawa but is interrupted when another first year, Yoshiko Tsushima, fell off a nearby tree. The three left, leaving Chika and You with the Student Council President, Dia Kurosawa...

Transferring to the student council office, Dia starts questioning Chika and You about their unofficial school idol club. Dia is unimpressed as Chika starts deflecting her questions and she simply states that Chika has not gathered enough members to start a club and more importantly, has no composer to make songs for the Love Live tournament. Even if they do have the required members, Dia can simply decline their club application as she vows that she won't allow a school idol club in Uranohoshi.

After school, Chika and You deliver an errand for another Childhood Friend, third year Kanan Matsuura who is taking a break from school due to her father's injury. A helicopter flies by and Kanan states that it belongs to the rich family nearby. The girl inside the helicopter, Mari Ohara, has returned from overseas after two years.

Coming home, Chika spotted a girl at the beach near her house. Chika stops her from attempting to swim in the freezing sea. After introducing herself as Riko Sakurauchi, she confessed to Chika that she transferred to Uchiura from Otonokizaka High in Tokyo in the hopes of hearing the sound of the sea.

The next day, Riko is introduced to Chika's class. Having trouble getting a composer, Chika tries to recruit Riko for her school idol club... Only for Riko to politely refuse.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Against the Setting Sun: Chika explains her dream of forming a school idol group to Riko while they watch the sunset on the beach, but this is mostly because she just stopped Riko from jumping into the freezing springtime ocean.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode ends with Chika inviting Riko to be a school idol. The latter smiles at the thought... only to politely refuse.
  • Call-Back: Similar to Honoka, Chika decided to be a school idol after seeing a school idol performance at the UTX screen.
  • Debut Queue: The audience meets all the would-be members in the first episode but it takes some time for all of them to join.
  • Dramatic Wind: During the scene with Dia, the open window behind her lets in a gush of air that blows against Chika.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Chika confesses to Riko that she's too normal and that seeing μ's, which are composed of normal girls like her, perform gave her the motivation to change and become a school idol.
  • Insert Song: "Kimeta yo Hand in Hand"
  • Mythology Gag: The camera does a 360 spin as Riko runs toward the camera, echoing a similar shot with Honoka from the first episode of the original series.
  • New Transfer Student: Riko
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Averted for Riko unlike the 1st PV. She wears the proper uniform on her first day at Uranohoshi.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Student Council President Dia opposes the formation of a school idol club at Uranohoshi.
  • Refusal of the Call: Riko refuses Chika's invitation to her school idol club.
  • Watching the Sunset: Chika and Riko watch the sunset on the beach while Chika explains her motivations for forming an idol group.

Chika and Yoshiko

During Chika and Yoshiko's first interaction together, the former initially asks the latter if she's okay in the original Japanese Dub, twice. In the English Dub, Chika's second response is to sarcastically state that Yoshiko has brain damage.
