Recap / Lord Marksman And Vanadis Volume 3

Go To

The third story arc of Lord Marksman and Vanadis, which covers Volume 3 of the light novel series, and the second half of Episode 6, Episode 7, the first half of Episode 8 of the anime series.

Shortly after Mila declared neutrality during Brune Civil War, Roland, the leader of the Navarre Knights and the champion of Brune, is summon by Duke Thenarider and Duke Ganelon in defeating Tigre, who was declared as the "traitor" of Brune under Prime Minister Pierre Badouin, Meanwhile, Tigre and his allies are establishing a new army under the name the Silver Meteor Army, a Coalition Army that consists of soldiers from Brune and Zhcted under the leadership from Tigre of Alsace and Elen of Leitmeritz. In order to prove Tigre' innocence, the Silver Meteor Storm must battle against the Navarre Knights. At the same time, a brief origins of the Black Bow is explored via Tir Na Fal, the Goddess of Darkness, Night and Death.

Volume 3 contains particular-to-this-volume examples of:

  • Action Prologue: The volume starts with the Navarre Knights crushing their enemy the Sachstein Army effortlessly, thus preventing its another invasion attempt.
  • Adapted Out:
    • Greast originally appears before Roland and the Navarre Knights as the first villain prior to the Silver Meteor Army's early formation. In spite his crucial role for both Light Novel (especially the 13th Volume) and Manga series however, he doesn't appear in the anime due to it being a Compressed Adaptation.
      • Because of this, the battle between the Silver Meteor Army and Ganelon Army (led by Greast) is entirely omitted out from the anime adaptation, making the Silver Meteor Army's first battle goes to the Navarre Knights instead.
    • Speaking of first battle against the Navarre Knights, only in the anime, the Navarre Knight did not throw their javelins at Elen and Tigre from their escape.
    • Tigre's Charged Arrow Shot to Roland itself is this: While the Light Novel and Manga adaptation does show what the Black Bow can do, such as absorbing Elen's and Sofy's Dragon Gear's powers and convert them into its own, its looks like a normal version of the attack that freed Titta from Tir Na Fal's possession.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The manga's Chapter 27 adding Tigre's brief appearance (and disappearance) where he saves Lim from one of the Navarre Knights before confronting Roland.
  • Arc Villain: Roland is this in this volume's third arc.
  • Badass Army: Silver Meteor Army and Navarre Knights respectively.
  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: Two parts of the Battle of Orange between the Silver Meteor Storm and Navarre Knights, even though Tigre arrived later after his visit at the Tir Na Fal temple and gained the Black Bow's power.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Sofya arrives and rescues both Elen and (injured) Tigre just in time before the Navarre Knights' second javelins wave landing onto them, and then buy their escape by stopping Navarre Knights's pursue and then facing Roland, all by herself.
    • Mashas and his army arrive just in time in order to aid the Silver Meteor Army's retreat and also causing the Navarre Knights to postpone their battle.
    • Tigre himself arrive to the battlefield in a nick of time to help the War Maidens (Elen and Sofy) from Roland, while still recovering from his injury from the Durandal's slash. Bonus mention in the manga adaptation where he (briefly) aiding the Silver Meteor Army from the Navarre Knights before heading for the two War Maidens.
  • Bee-Bee Gun: Ganelon uses this to kill Roland, who had been trapped in a windowless room.
  • Category Traitor: Tigre is accused as traitor under Prime Minister Badouin
  • The Cavalry: Mashas's Big Damn Heroes moments is this where his army manage to aid the Silver Meteor Army's retreat.
  • Character Death: Roland is murdered courtesy to Ganelon in the volume's epilogue.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Navarre Knights easily curb-stomping Sachstein Army's Invasion Army without breaking a sweat.
    • The Silver Meteor Army's first battle against Greast's led Ganelon Army via ambush tactic.
    • Navarre Knights beats the Silver Meteor Army in the First Round that forcing the latter's retreat.
  • Dungeon Crawling: Tigre's and Titta's visit at Tir Na Fal's temple is this, courtesy to the Black Bow's power.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Throughout the second half of Second Battle of Orange, the Silver Meteor Army manages to get their comeback thanks to Hughes' mud trap tactic.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Elen towards her first battle against Roland, and also Tigre's injury
    • Sofy's reaction when Roland manages to break through her Light Barrier like a glass.
    • Both Elen and Sofy are this when even their teamwork are unable to put Roland down.
  • Symbiotic Possession: Titta is this when being possessed by Tir Na Fal, the Goddess of Darkness, Night and Death.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Thenardier and Ganelon is this when they reluctantly working together in ridding off Tigre by summoning Roland at their side. This "alliance" is short-lived however when Roland is murdered by Ganelon via the Bee Room.
  • Worthy Opponent: Roland see the Vanadises and Tigre as these:
    • Elen and Sofy are the first two female warriors whom Roland faced respectively: Elen herself is the first female warrior he fight head on before Tigre's rescue; Sofy on the other hand capable enough in facing the entire pursuing Navarre Knights and Roland in order to buy Elen's and Tigre's retreat, all by herself before she eventually backs off via light teleportation.
      • If one is not dangerous enough, how about two? In the second battle, both Elen and Sofy are working together in fighting against Roland with their combined powers. Their teamwork did temporarily weaken the Black Knight, slightly, at first....
    • Tigre, whom Roland initially viewed as a "traitor" via false information from Duke Thenardier and Duke Ganelon, manages to escape from his clutches when his arrow—which flies midair as a diversion—kills his horse before grabbing Elen and flee from battle. The second encounter we have him confronting Roland and, thanks to the power the Black Bow, he manages to humble Roland who is later on his knees out of his feet's numbness, despite he did forcefully deflect the Charged Arrow Shot.
