Recap / lonelygirl15 S01 "The Mountain Cabin"

Go To

"And yeah, the last time that I saw my father he told me that a person can be so comfortable with everything they don't know that they just stop asking questions altogether, even though they know all the facts tell them that they should. He told me not to make that mistake. Since that day, I've been in such a messed-up place that I haven't even been able to follow my father's advice. In fact, I must be so easy to fool; I won't even ask the most obvious question when I'm walking right into a trap."
Bree about to drop a huge bombshell, "How Dumb Am I?"
Dates Posted: (2007) February 19-22, 24, 26-28, March 1, 2

Bree, Daniel, and Jonas drive up to Jonas' cabin up in the mountains to hide out from the Order for a bit. But they may have been beat there already...

"Yellow Snow": The gang heads out to a home Jonas' parents have in the mountains, as Jonas' regular house was compromised in "Watch This!".

"Snow Angels": Jonas says that while him and Bree were both up and unable to sleep last night, they decided to go for a hike. Jonas makes preparations, then Bree joins him and they frolic outside.

"Jonas Sucks": Daniel sits on the stairs, and talks about how he reacted to Jonas and Bree yesterday. He says he was pissed about them not involving him, and he's shocked after seeing their video. He complains about how obvious it is that Jonas is into Bree. He goes on to say that he's got something more important to do than whatever Bree's up to and reveals that he's gotten a package from Tachyon, along with a card signed by her.

"Men Are From Mars": Bree discusses Jonas and Daniel's spat, and decides to try to interview them to see if she can fix their relationship.

"Cracked The File": Daniel says that he and Jonas have reconciled, with Jonas claiming he's not into Bree and both of them realizing they have to stick together. He then starts talking about the puzzle he's been trying to crack. He says he was reading the books to try to find the clue to crack it but came up empty, so he went on the forums and found that the fans had solved it.

"How Dumb Am I?": Bree sits in front of the camera and talks about how she's been feeling over the last few months. She says she's been having a hard time even beginning to process everything. She talks for a while about the things her dad told her about science, religion, and, most importantly, how you should always be asking questions, which was the advice he gave her on the day he died. Bree observes that she hasn't been doing this at all, which must've made her easy to fool...

"Bree Is Crazy": Daniel is outside, and says that Bree went off on Jonas yesterday, blaming him for everything that's happened over the last few months. Daniel, however, isn't convinced that Jonas is even a member of the Order.

"Interrogation 101": Daniel is outside. He says that he's not sure that him and Bree are doing the right thing, and he's going to talk to Jonas alone to see if he can get the truth out of him. It doesn't go as well as Daniel hoped it might, and at the end he's filming Bree, who's sitting outside with a warm drink. He says she's mad at him for talking to Jonas and wants to abandon him. Daniel thinks that's too far and doesn't even think that Jonas is in the Order at all.

"What The Hell?!??!": Bree calls for Daniel, because she just discovered that Jonas is missing and so are the car keys...

"Is He Out There?": Daniel sits in the living room with his back to the window. He says that it's his turn to keep watch out for Jonas coming back. He discusses his feelings on the events of the last few days, talking about how crazy everything's been. He confesses to loosening Jonas' ropes after the events of "Interrogation 101". He talks about Jonas, then finishes by saying that they're going to leave in the morning if Jonas doesn't return.

"Proving Bree Wrong": Jonas is somewhere deep in the woods, and talks about how he's going to try and prove his innocence, but he has to do it by breaking into the house and finding his parents' files in the hopes of finding something that proves he is not part of the Order.

Tropes:

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: This exchange when Bree and Jonas are hassling Daniel in "Yellow Snow" as he relieves himself:
Bree: You're taking forever! Why is this taking so long?
Daniel: 'Cause I'm trying to write your name in cursive! Chill!
  • Badass Boast: At the end of "How Dumb Am I?", Bree lets the Order know she's no longer to be trifled with:
Bree: I really was clueless before, but that dumb girl... died... the day that you killed her father.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: There's no real reason for Jonas to have held back during questioning from Bree or Daniel that there were documents in the attic of the cabin that proved that he wasn't a part of the Order. But instead, he says nothing and resorts to escaping and then breaking back into his own house to do the same thing.
  • Breaking the Bonds: Jonas appears to have done this to escape in "What The Hell?!??!"... but the next episode reveals that Daniel loosened the ropes ahead of time.
  • Call-Back:
    • Jonas' comment in "Snow Angels" about not making egg-salad sandwiches was a reference to "My Parents Suck..." where Bree made egg-salad sandwiches in preparation for her hike with Daniel.
    • The title of "Proving Bree Wrong" obviously refers to the "Proving Science Wrong" videos from early in the series.
  • Copycat Mockery: In "Jonas Sucks" Daniel has a recitation of the advice Jonas gave him about Bree where he drops into more of a "bro" voice with every sentence.
Daniel: "You gotta tell her how you feel man. Don't beat around the bush bro. Peace." Dick.
  • Curse Cut Short: From "Men Are From Mars":
Bree: What annoys you the most about Jonas?
Daniel: Everything, he's a piece of sh— (cuts away to Jonas on the couch)
Jonas: He didn't say that. Did he really say that?
  • Detectives Follow Footprints: A non-detective example in "What The Hell?!??!" where Daniel attempts to follow Jonas' footprints, and does for a while, but eventually reaches a road that cuts off the trail and has to turn back.
  • Directionless Driver: Jonas shows this for the first time in "Yellow Snow", but not the last, getting lost on his way up the mountain.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: A couple examples from "Interrogation 101":
    • Jonas suggests that Daniel helping Bree tie him up was because of this:
Jonas: Let me ask you this, Daniel. (...) Is this because of the hike?
      Daniel: What?!
Jonas: Maybe you just did all this so you could get me out of the way, get Bree all to yourself!
    • Bree's suggestion for how to leave Jonas, who hasn't been firmly proven to even be a part of the Order, is to leave him with a plate of food and take off. Daniel opines that this punishment is way too harsh for how little Jonas has done.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way: Defied in "Interrogation 101".
Daniel: Come on, man, just... I'm trying to do it the easy way. Okay? Bree—
Jonas: This is not the easy way, man!
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Downplayed in "Men Are From Mars". When Bree spoils the mystery book Daniel's reading, Daniel slowly takes out his earbuds, and says, very seriously, "That's messed up, Bree."
  • Flipping the Bird: Jonas flips Daniel the double-bird after he refuses to untie him in "Interrogation 101".
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Daniel plays toward this a little bit in "Interrogation 101", presenting himself as a good cop to Bree's bad cop. It doesn't really help much, though.
Daniel: You gotta calm down. I don't want Bree to come in here, okay?
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: In "Proving Bree Wrong", we see Daniel decide to settle in for a nap while he's supposed to be keeping watch for someone who might be a serious threat to him and Bree.
  • Info Dump: Daniel gives a short one in "Cracked The File" to explain the solution to the puzzle. For the curious...
  • P.O.V. Sequel: "Proving Bree Wrong" is Jonas' perspective on the night shown in "Is He Out There?", which was shot by Daniel.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Bree gave one off-screen to Jonas before "Bree Is Crazy". According to Daniel, she yelled at him for about an hour straight, holding Jonas personally responsible for every bad thing the Order has done to them.
  • Red Herring: Played with regarding a clue Daniel finds in Tachyon's box. Daniel incorrectly identifies Tachyon's note as being in haiku during "Jonas Sucks", but this does call attention to the number of syllables in the note, which turns out to be part of the password for unlocking the disk Bree got back in "Rescuing Daniel".
  • Shout-Out:
    • The box Daniel opens in "Jonas Sucks" contains a bunch of Nancy Drew books. Tying into this, Daniel is reading the Nancy Drew book "The Clue in the Diary" during "Men Are From Mars".
    • Jonas jokingly asks Bree if she thinks she's Dr. Phil during her interviews in "Men Are From Mars".
    • In "Bree Is Crazy", Daniel calls Gemma's deception her "Posh Spice bit". This actually works pretty well, as Posh Spice was Victoria Beckham, a Brit who lived in London and later moved to Los Angeles, much like Gemma did (although as far as we know, Beckham is not a part of an evil cult).
    • Shortly after we cut to Daniel's interrogation in "Interrogation 101", Jonas tells him this isn't Reservoir Dogs (presumably he was thinking of that movie's "interrogation"...)
  • Subject 101: "Interrogation 101", naturally.
  • Thanking the Viewer: Daniel thanks several forum users by name in "Cracked The File" for cracking the clue.
  • Wham Line: The penultimate line of "How Dumb Am I?":
Bree: Whoever is watching this, I have Jonas, and he's not going anywhere until he tells me everything. Right now, I'm just deciding where to begin.
  • Yellow Snow: Right in the title of "Yellow Snow". Although none is seen on camera, it's presumably produced when Daniel pees in the bushes.

"I really was clueless before, but that dumb girl... died... the day that you killed her father."
