Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 18 I Want To Be A Cavegirl

Go To

The narrator is wondering why the Princess is in the garden shed when the castle is such a good place to live. She's drawing a picture of prehistoric versions of herself and Scruff. She calls it "cave drawing" and explains that her dad told her that cavepeople lived a very long time ago and she wants to be a cavegirl. When the narrator asks why, the Princess responds that cavegirls do "just what they want".

At lunch time, the Princess enters with messy hair, a sleeveless dress with torn hems, a leopard-print belt, and bear slippers, growling and carrying a bow (as in the weapon) in one hand and a net in the other. This shocks the King, Queen, and Maid, and she explains that she's being a cavegirl. Still a bit taken aback, they try to politely accept it, but when she eats without utensils and leaves the table without asking, the King and Queen think this is too rude. The Princess declares she's going to live in a cave and leaves.

Outside, Puss sees a drawing of a sabre-tooth tiger and uses carrots to pretend to be one. He sneaks up on Scruff, but Scruff doesn't notice, so Puss gives up. Then, the Princes starts doing archery with rubber arrows, pretending to hunt. She "catches" Nessie, so the General demands an apology. The Princess apologises and explains that she's being a cavegirl hunting. The General asks if being a cavegirl is fun, and she responds in the affirmative, inviting him to give the "hunting" a go.

He catches the Maid, and the Princess wonders if he's caught a woolly mammoth, which she describes as a "hairy elephant". When the Maid comes out, he tries to apologise, but only makes it worse by saying, "I thought you were a hairy elephant". Puss tries to scare Scruff again by swinging from a kite in a tree wearing a leotard, but Scruff again doesn't notice and Puss bumps into the tree.

Later, the Princess, now with warpaint on her face, does a "cavegirl dance", jumping up and down and chanting, "Oom-baba-lumba!". Puss tries to scare Scruff again by going under a box and roaring, but Scruff isn't scared, and to make matters worse, the Princess starts drumming on his box (with recorders) to make "cave music".

In the evening, the Maid tells the Princess to stop playing cavegirl, take a bath, and comb her hair, but she refuses, declaring she'll live in the shed forever. The Maid retrieves the King and Queen, who try to reason with the Princess and say she can be a cavegirl tomorrow, but she stubbornly declares that she will be a cavegirl "at day" and at night, so the King and Queen allow her to sleep in the shed.

Some time later, an owl hoots, which wakes up Puss, so he nervously meows, which wakes up the Princess. She tells him he is silly for being scared of an owl and they fall back asleep, but then a duck quacks, waking them both up. The Princess quickly realises that it was only a duck, but Puss is still scared and wants the light to still be on.

Sometime later, they're both still awake and now both of them are a bit jumpy because of the sounds outside. Someone starts to approach, as the Princess starts to miss her old life and eventually screams, but it's only the Maid bringing Gilbert, cookies, and milk. Later, the King and Queen tuck the Princess back to her regular bed.

This episode provides examples of

  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • The Princess thinks mammoths are just hairy elephants, even though there are more differences between the two species, such as their larger tusks. Justified as the Princess is only four and thus shouldn't be expected to know all about biology.
    • When Puss is afraid of the birds calling at night, he wants the light on. In reality, cats have excellent night vision, so it's unlikely a cat would want the light on if he were scared.
  • Artistic License – History: When the Princess uses recorders as drumsticks, she claims that cavepeople used recorders in the same way. In actuality, while mouth instruments likely did exist in the Stone Age, recorders per se didn't.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Puss once wears a leotard with no shoes.
  • Buffy Speak:
    • The Princess describes cavepeople as living a long, long, "longy" long time ago.
    • When the Princess wants to be a cavegirl both during the day and at night, she says, "at day" instead of "during the day".
  • Cringe Comedy: The General catches the Maid (who he has an unrequited crush on, we might add!) with the Princess's rubber arrow, ticking her off. He tries to apologise, but says, "I thought you were a hairy elephant", which only offends her more.
    Princess: "Uh-oh!"
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The episode ends with the Princess and the pets falling asleep in her bed.
  • I Am Not Weasel: The General thinks he's caught a woolly mammoth, but it turns out to be a human, namely the Maid.
  • Insomnia Episode: Downplayed. Most of the episode is about the Princess playing cavegirl in the daytime, but at night, she and Puss have trouble sleeping due to strange noises outside scaring them.
  • Speak in Unison: The King and Queen say, "Oh, dear" in unison when the Princess says that cavegirls don't have manners.
  • Title Drop: The Princess yells out the episode title when declaring that she wants to live forever in the shed.
  • Toilet Humour: The Princess farts in her sleep at one point.
