Season 1, Episode 9: Wet Bodies

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Ambiguously Bi: Chrissy has voiced attraction to men before, such as Channing Tatum. In this episode she acts quite nervous around the lovely wood nymp like Plant Person girl she meets outside a supernatural convenience store, getting especially bashful when said girl calls her cute.
    • Laura's romance with the Sea Hag unambiguously confirms her bisexuality.
  • Basilisk and Cockatrice: Francise is a cockatrice, which is basically a dragon with chicken characteristics.
  • Black Comedy: The gas station in the Metaphysical Realm is called "9-Eleven."
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: The Unshaven Man is genuinely put out when Chrissy admits that she doesn't remember him.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Subverted. Satan gives Chrissy a button to push when she ends up in trouble, whereupon he will appear and bail her out. Wouldn't ya know it, when Chrissy needs him and she presses the button, Satan is too high out of his mind to notice.
    • When we are introduced to the Moth Brothers, we see one of them mesmerized by a gas station light. Later, Chrissy uses a crystal ball to mesmerize them long enough to reacclimatize herself.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Chrissy finding Bennigan and his family tied up and held hostage by the Unshaven Man.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Everyone dismisses Durlawne's stories of a sea hag lurking around the beach to be the ramblings of an old lady. Wouldn't you know it, the Sea Hag is real.
  • The Mothman: The closest thing the episode has to an antagonist is a trio of moth humanoids who ate their Plant Person lady-friend and almost did the same to Chrissy.
  • Noodle Incident: The Sea Hag once ate a baby on a dare and we never find the context for it.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: The Sea Hag is a bipedal fish person who's immortal, having unwittingly caused Ragnarok with a Love Triangle between her, Fenrir, and Jormungandr.
  • Pun: When Chrissy punches one of the Mothmen in the nuts, he cries out "my moth balls!"
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder:
    • When Durlawne mentions a "Sea Hag", Laura sarcastically asks if that's code for a woman that stole her husband. Turns out another woman did steal her husband, but they're cool now. The Sea Hag is a literal Sea Hag.
    • When Snake-With-Arms wants to discuss Satan's drug problem, he rhetorically asks "what are you, my sponsor?" Snake-With-Arms answers yes.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chrissy shouts "I am Khaleesi!" when she is first seen riding a giant cockatrice.
    • Laura compares the Sea Hag's calling spell to Candyman.
  • Worf Had the Flu: One of the Moth Brothers tranqs Chrissy before she could use her Satanic powers to make them explode, meaning she has to survive her encounter with them without her powers.
