Recap / Legacies S 3 E 15 A New Hope

Go To

Hope, Josie and Lizzie are trapped in a sci-fi inspired hallucination they must escape from. Kaleb and Jed are sent on a team building mission by Alaric.

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Parody: The sci-fi hallucination that Hope, Josie and Lizzie are trapped in is clearly designed to be a very loose one of Star Wars. This even applies in-universe when they discover that the hallucination is adapted from a story that Lizzie wrote in her diary at age 11, with Lizzie herself openly admitting that large portions of it were directly copied from "an old sci-fi movie" she saw once.
  • Author Avatar: In-universe, Lizzie's role in the hallucination is to literally play the part of her own self-insert character from her original version of the story. Hope's own Author Avatar from her revised version of the story shows up as a separate character to rescue the trio after they've been captured by the story's villain.
  • Back from the Dead: At the end of the episode its revealed that the creature that was resurrected by the cult in the previous episode is Ryan Clarke.
  • Bluff the Imposter: When the Wendigo tries to hitch a ride with Kaleb while disguised as MG, Kaleb immediately catches on that it's not MG when the Wendigo readily agrees to leave Jed behind (something that Kaleb knows the real MG would never do).
  • Canon Foreigner: Hope's role in the hallucination is one as she's in the part of a character who didn't exist in Lizzie's original version of the story, which is the first clue to the girls that the hallucination is not an exact recreation of Lizzie's original story.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: MG is convinced the Wendigo hunt is just Alaric's attempt to get him, Jed and Kaleb to work together, unaware it's very real.
  • Kill It with Fire: MG kills the Wendigo again by impaling it in the chest with a lit torch and proceeds to burn its entire body this time, taking no chances of it managing to revive itself again for round three.
  • Not Quite Dead: It turns out that MG melting the Wendigo's heart of ice in the last episode wasn't quite enough to fully kill it as it is able to recover (albeit in a severely weakened state) to confront MG, Kaleb and Jed a second time.
  • Wham Shot: The girls following the footsteps from the spell to Andi's cabin and finding a recently resurrected Clarke.
  • Writer's Block: In-universe example as Lizzie relates that she could never finish her story as the realization she couldn't even make herself the hero of her own tale caused her to give up. Which means she has no more idea how to save themselves.
  • You Are Not Alone: After bemoaning that it seems she will have to accept becoming a Tribrid to kill Malivore Josie and Lizzie tell Hope that the reason she had to kill Malivore in the hallucination was because she fought it alone and promise to find a way for her to not fight alone.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: After escaping from the hallucination Hope believes that she now has no choice but to accept her destiny and become a full Tribrid to kill Malivore. Jozie and Lizzie completely disagree with this.
