Tropes

  • Big "NO!": Jeremy's mother does this when the verdict is read.
  • Downer Ending: Jeremy's mother refuses a plea deal that would see her son get out in 5-10 years. Instead, the jury convicts on second-degree murder, leaving Jeremy to face a life sentence for a murder he didn't commit.
  • Put Off Their Food: Warner telling Benson and Stabler about the analysis of the vomit from the crime scene provides the page quote. After Warner provides details, Benson decides that she is indeed done. Stabler, who has four children, keeps right on eating.
  • Red Herring: The first part of the episode focuses on the members of the victim's drug club, who were unrelated to her murder.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Cabot refuses to prosecute Jeremy Brice on the grounds that it's immoral he'll face harsher punishment than the actual murderer due to the law because he's slightly older. Her boss takes over as primary prosecutor on the case.
  • The Sociopath: It's implied that Zachary is this, but Huang points out that psychologists are barred from diagnosing children as such due to their age.
  • Stupid Crooks: Zachary and Jeremy make several mistakes, leave behind a ton of evidence, and hide things in obvious places, which leads to their apprehension. Justified since they are both kids.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Marc Lesinski informed his classmates that his neighbor was dealing drugs and probably had a lot of money to steal, and this sets off a chain of events that leads to her rape and murder.
