Due to her getting old and possibly going into heat for the last time, Hank works hard for Ladybird so she can have a puppy, with his efforts making Peggy jealous. Dale becomes a bounty hunter.
Tropes:
- Angry Guard Dog: Jimmy has ten of them surrounding his house. So Dale kidnaps Ladybird and uses her to go after him. And naturally, Hank and Peggy have to fend them off to rescue Ladybird.
- Baby Fever Trigger: Peggy wants to have another child after seeing Hank try to get the family dog Lady Bird (who has a narrow uterus) to have puppies, and gets jealous that Hank won't put in the same effort to aid his own fertility issues. However, it turns out Hank wanted puppies to relax them enough to conceive again, as it was adopting Lady Bird as a puppy years prior that had relaxed them enough to conceive Bobby.
- Bounty Hunter: Dale takes a four-hour course to become a bounty hunter and gets assigned Jimmy Helstrom, who's had several unpaid parking tickets.
- Captain Oblivious: Hank meets two fairly stereotypical gay guys at the park, and he asks if the two "brothers" can give him tips about fertilization. He later states that their trip to a bar "went horribly wrong".
- Eating Pet Food: Bill takes Ladybird's hormone doggy biscuits from Bobby and eats them. He actually enjoys them and has Bobby get more in exchange for telling him whether or not he was adopted.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Initially after trying to go for their guns, Jimmy compliments Dale's hat with Dale returning the favor. The Stinger reveals they befriended each other and watch What's Happening!! on TV.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Peggy becomes incredibly jealous of Hank and Ladybird because of the incredible lengths Hank is going through to get her breeding, even willing as to get a test-tube puppy (of note, back in flashback, Hank didn't want to have a test tube baby with Peggy, apparently under the impression that the baby would be growing up in the tube. He of course changed his opinion in the upcoming years). He of course explains he's going through these efforts since she's a dog and didn't do so with Peggy because he wanted it to be romantic, which is why he wanted another puppy so he can relax and have another child.
- I Have Your Wife: Dale kidnaps Ladybird so he can use her hormones to distract the guard dogs so he can go after Jimmy Helstrom. He leaves a note for Hank so he and Peggy go after her, only to find her locked inside his van with the window rolled up, in hot weather (a very real danger, why it's stressed not to leave pets or children in hot cars in the summer).
- Law of Inverse Fertility: Flashbacks show that Hank and Peggy were struggling to have a baby due to his narrow urethra (mainly resulting from him being tense). Then later on, Hank gets a puppy Ladybird, which causes Hank to relax and his urethra to follow suit, resulting in Peggy getting pregnant with Bobby.
- Let's Have Another Baby: After a heated argument, Hank and Peggy decided they want to have another baby, which is why he wanted to get Ladybird pregnant; having another puppy can relax him and his urethra so he and Peggy can have another child.
- Like Father, Like Son: A human owner and pet variant: Ladybird has fertility issues because she has a narrow uterus, much like Hank and his narrow urethra.
- Mama Bear: Peggy drops all of her resentment for Ladybird the very instant she sees her in Dale's van and surrounded by several dogs outside of the van."Mama's coming!"
- Mexican Standoff: Subverted. Between Dale and Jimmy, who see each other aiming their rifles and both scare each other into dropping their weapons. And when they both try to get their guns, they scare each other into putting their hands up. The two even become friends afterwards.
- Sexy Discretion Shot: In the aforementioned flashback, with Hank and Peggy making love in the living room after getting Ladybird. Right when they begin, it cuts to the puppy Ladybird, looking at them curiously.
- Shout-Out: The credits, with Jimmy and Dale, is one to Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, notice the way they’ve sat on the couch.
- Special Guest: William H. Macy as Dr. Rubin and John Ashton as the Instructor.
- Uncool Undies: Peggy puts Hank's old white briefs on Ladybird as she's in heat. Hank is incredibly mortified to see this as even he doesn't wear them anymore.
- Woman Scorned: Subverted. After Hank gets ready to get Ladybird to fly her to Michigan so he can put her in a test tube program, Peggy gets angry and gets ready to get back at him by destroying his lawn mower with his golf club but she relents when she sees Hank at Ladybird's cage after Dale took her.
