This episode contains examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Bobby and Luanne fail to clean up the living room in time before Hank and Peggy get home.
  • Alliterative Name: Cissy Cobb.
  • Big Game: The Dallas Boggle Championship, where Peggy and Cissy Cobb reach the finals, with Peggy walking out as the victor.
  • Chair Reveal: straight with Cissy Cobb introduction and subverted later when Peggy rotates the chair to reveal that it's empty and Cissy comes into the frame from the side.
  • Characterization Marches On: In this episode, Hank doesn't seem to have a high opinion of the Dallas Cowboys, where later on, he's shown to be a die hard fan.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Detailed below with Bobby and Luanne's exploits. Hank and Peggy (when they get home) think they're having a party. As a result, the workers get thrown out and Bobby and Luanne get grounded.
  • Comical Overreacting: Bobby and Luanne's scenes while Hank and Peggy are in Dallas. Both freak out when Bobby doesn't use a coaster, leaving a ring on the table and both freak out, which results in them giving the living room a total makeover.
  • Death Glare: Hank gives Bobby a brief one after the latter points out Peggy's trophy from the local Boggle competition is bigger than Hank's football trophy.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Peggy briefly hits it in the last round of the finals when she breaks her last pencil. Thankfully, Hank comes to the rescue in the last few minutes.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Bobby forgets to put a coaster under his glass on the coffee table, leaving a ring in the varnish. As he and Luanne try to fix it, they spill varnish on the carpet. Bobby tries to vacuum it up, but only rips up part of the carpet, burns out the vacuum cleaner motor, and scorches the paint around the wall socket it was plugged into. He and Luanne eventually have to call in a work crew to put the living room back together.
  • Down to the Last Play: With Peggy's winning word: acquaintanceship.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Cissy Cobb's husband Brent sees Hank wearing a "Mr. Peggy Hill" nametag and thinks that's his real name.
Brent: You don't have to explain. I have an uncle named Leslie, and John Wayne, the Duke himself, was really named Marion.
    Hank: You take that back!
  • Epic Fail: Averted. Peggy is in second-to-last place. Obviously not an enviable position, but at least she's beating the Boggle-Playing Chicken.
  • False Reassurance: After Peggy loses to Cissy, Hank tries to reassure her that she's not dumb.
Hank: You're not dumb. You're smarter than I am.
    Peggy: Big deal.
Hank: Well, you're smarter than anyone at Arlen.
Peggy: Well, whoop-de-doo! I am the smartest hillbilly in Hillbilly Town!
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Hank at first wanted to leave Peggy alone during the Boggle tournament to go with the guys to a nearby lawnmower expo, but after Peggy does badly while Hank is not there, he decides to stay with her for support during the finals.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Cissy is so confident in her lead over Peggy that she only plays 3 words in the last round. She ends up losing by a single (very long) word.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After Hank's "pep talk" with Peggy goes wrong, he decides to have an $8 hotel beer.
  • Jerkass: Cissy Cobb the Boggle champion acts very condescending to Peggy, even referring to her as "Patches" (referring to the endorsement patches on her jacket).
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Played for Laughs with Hank being Peggy's coach and after she loses a round, he gives her a little pep talk: "LOSER! You're a LOSER! Are you feeling sorry for yourself?! Well, you should be, because you are DIRT! You make me sick, you big baby! Baby want a bottle? A big, DIRT bottle?!" Unsurprisingly, it doesn't quite get her motivated.
  • "Risky Business" Dance: Parodied when Bobby slides in in his underwear just as Luanne is watching the scene on TV. Turns out he hasn't seen the movie.
  • Scrabble Babble:
    • In a game of Boggle the wives play, Minh plays bametomyam, a Thai spicy noodle soup, but since it's not in the dictionary, it's not accepted.
    • Happens to Peggy in the first match against Cissy Cobb, with the only word she could come up with is "dang", which isn't in the dictionary and ends up losing 0-73 to Cissy.
    • Subverted in the final round when Cissy sees Peggy's final word, which she thinks is "ain't", but turns out to be "acquaintanceship".
  • Special Guest: Laurie Metcalf as Cissy Cobb
  • Take That!: When Peggy suggests to Hank she goes to Dallas for the State Boggle Championship, Hank disapproves because Dallas is "crawling with crackheads and debutantes... and half of them play for the Cowboys."
  • You Are Grounded!: Happens to Bobby and Luanne in The Tag after they fail to clean up the living room in time before Hank and Peggy come home.
