Go To

A cheaply-made McMansion is built on Rainey Street thanks to Ted Wassanasong, and, after Kahn finds out that Ted won't be moving in and the house's construction causes problems, the neighbors team up to tear it down during a violent storm, while Nancy videotapes the action. Ted takes the neighbors to court for destruction of private property, but unfortunately Hank's technical speech about the inadequate building materials doesn't sway the judge or the jury. However, Edgar Hornsby, a lawyer hired to represent the neighbors, shows Nancy's video and references another case in which a town tore down a privately owned oil rig because it threatened the town's safety. The judge declares that although the neighbor's destroyed Ted's house, the fact that it threatened the private property and safety of the neighbors made it appropriate for them to tear it down, so Hank and company are ruled to be not liable for any financial damages Ted suffered due to the destruction of the shoddily built McMansion. Ted gets the last laugh when he sells the land on the cheap to the city, which places an eyesore of a power station in the middle of the neighborhood, and Hank and the guys use Hornsby's legal know-how to hide it by building a house-shaped shell around it.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Although Ted's McMansion is destroyed, and Hank and his neighbors manage to avoid any legal trouble when Ted takes them to court, Ted still manages to get the last laugh when he spitefully replaces his McMansion with a power station instead, which is just as ugly to look at. Luckily, Hank and his friends manage to find a legal work around to this as well thanks to Hornsby.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The storm threatens to topple over the McMansion, so Hank, his family, and neighbors do the only thing they can do to stop it from destroying the neighborhood: tear it down with axes, hammers, crowbars, and Lucky's truck wench.
  • Loophole Abuse: Thanks to town clerk Edgar Hornsby as the surprise witness finding a loophole where people can destroy an adjoining property if said property is structurally unsound and can collapse and damage their own property, the judge declares Hank and company not liable for destroying Ted's house. The residence is replaced with an eyesore of a power station, so the boys decide to hide it by building a house-shaped shell around it.
  • Special Guest: Bob Elliot as Edgar Hornsby, Chris Elliot as Ed Burnett and Tom Petty as Lucky.
  • Spotting the Thread: When Ted sees his McMansion destroyed, the neighbors initially try to dismiss it as the result of last night's storm. However, he sees all the damage done from the tools and knows it was all man-made, accusing them of drunkenly destroying it.
