Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 14 E 08 Paddys Has A Jumper

Go To

Trapped inside Paddy's with a suicide jumper on the roof, the Gang wonders if they should bother intervening with an algorithm of their own - Could he, would he, should we?

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: Frank manages to get the jumper down due to a miscommunication that had the jumper believe that he was his father.
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode takes place in or around the bar and has very few characters outside of the Gang.
  • The Bus Came Back: Jackie Denardo reappears after a five-season absence.
  • Call-Back: Charlie dismissively tells Cricket to go get high in Paddy's bathroom.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: The Gang managed to convince themselves that they should make Brian jump so that they can benefit from the infamy of being a "suicide bar."
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Jackie Denardo and her ample bosom return, and with it comes Frank's turn to be left speechless while ogling her.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: The Gang accuses Frank of having sex with the casaba melon, which he initially denies. Frank admits at the end that he has, in fact, been having sex with the casaba melon when Cricket asks whether he can eat it now that it's lost its value as a weed stash.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Frank seems to think that they best place to hide his weed is in a casaba melon with an obvious cutting in it which is then stored in a safe. The gang points out that not only is it not as inconspicuous that he thinks it is, but weed is basically legal in Philadelphia at that point, thus rendering the entire get-up pointless.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Ronald "Mac" McDonald makes fun of the jumper's name and calls him a clown.
    • Everyone gets on Dee's case for allegedly eating butts, right after Dennis describes it in a way that sounds like he's had experience with it.
  • Noodle Implements: Mac's idea of getting to know someone: sleeping with their priest, blackmailing the priest for information, then asking the priest to beg God for forgiveness for the blackmail.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Frank talks about his deranged son doing something really stupid this time (meaning Dennis) but Jackie/the cop assume he's talking about the jumper.
  • Precision F-Strike: Mac calls Dee a "nasty fucking slut" when Mac, Charlie, and Dennis assume she has been "eating butts."
  • Prelude to Suicide: The Gang is very disturbed by the amount of thought Dee has put into suicide, including apparent research into slicing her wrists.
  • Psychological Projection: Dennis' psychological profile on the jumper (bad relationship with his father, clinging to his youth, bad dating experience, and perverse sexual fetishes) happens to fit his own profile.
  • Skewed Priorities: The gang's main priorities in whether they should prevent or encourage the jumper to kill himself are whether his head is going to explode if he lands head first and whether they can use it to increase the bar's popularity.
  • Take That!: The episode pokes fun at the focus group-based viewing algorithm, the episode beginning when the Gang (sans Frank) are watching an Edwardian Prime Time Soap and remarking how much they like it. By the end of the episode, they admit they only watch it because the algorithm told them to watch it and reveal that they don't really enjoy it.
  • Whale Egg: Charlie assumes the egg he found is a "rat's egg." Rats are mammals and give live birth.
