Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 01 E 05 Gun Fever

Go To

"Charlie, my boy, you've got the gun fever."
Mac

When Paddy's is robbed, Charlie and Mac suspect it was an inside job (turns out Dee's dating the culprit), and Dennis decides to protect the place by purchasing a firearm but gets trigger-happy instead.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Amateur Sleuth: Mac and Dennis attempt to become these when they try to solve the robbery themselves. Predictably, they're bad at it.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Mac asking Charlie if he's okay after shooting him in the head.
  • Clue, Evidence, and a Smoking Gun: The Gang's clues for why Colin is the culprit: he's been dating female bartenders all over town, there's been a string of bar robberies all over town, and he specifically asked Dee to show him where and how Paddy's Pub keeps its money. (Apparently, the entire Gang was fully aware of this for almost the entire episode, but it still took them a while to piece it all together.)
  • Cranky Landlord: Charlie's landlord Hwang.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Dee's boyfriend Colin teaching her how to shoot a gun:
Colin: It's alright to be a little nervous. Everyone's nervous their first time, but I promise you, once you put your hand around this... you are gonna love it.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Mac makes fun of Dennis for having standards so high that he doesn't get laid often. Later episodes (and his extensive sex tape collection) establish that Dennis is quite capable of getting laid, and his standards are not that high.
  • Gun Nut: Colin claims that knowing how to use a gun is an important part of American culture and carries one with him at all times. Mac and Dennis are also lesser examples, and Charlie eventually becomes one.
  • Has a Type: Colin exclusively dates female bartenders. Subverted in that he only does it to find out where the bar owners keep their money so he can rob them.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Dennis calls Colin a "penis" for messing around on Dee and dating every hot bartender in the area, Mac points out that Dennis would probably do the exact same thing given the chance.
  • Jerkass: Colin. Dennis compares him to a bad 80s movie stereotype, and it's not inaccurate.
  • Jerkass Victim: It's difficult to feel sorry for the gang, even after they get robbed twice in the space of an episode.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Charlie's response to getting shot in the head is mostly just to yell at Dennis for shooting him in the head. Though admittedly the bullet only grazed him.
  • Not So Above It All: Charlie is initially opposed to the idea of getting a gun, but he ends up being even more obsessed with it than Mac and Dennis after they convince him to try shooting it. Similarly, Dee spends most of the episode chastising the guys for their fixation, but when an "intruder" enters the bar she ends up screaming at Dennis to shoot him in the face.
  • Pants-Positive Safety: Charlie, Dennis, and Colin all keep their guns down the front of their pants at various points throughout the episode.
  • Police Are Useless: In Mac and Dennis's opinion they are, and to be fair they don't seem particularly concerned with catching the culprit. It's even mentioned they're the latest victims in a string of robberies in the area and the police have no leads.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: All over the place. At one point Mac points the gun at Dennis's head while they're walking down the hallway, and then accidentally ejects the magazine. Later Dennis shoots wildly at what he thinks is Colin breaking into the bar, and ends up shooting Charlie into the head.
  • Returning to the Scene: Mac and Dennis attempt to trick Colin into doing this by telling him that there's still money left in the cash register. Unfortunately, he turns out to be smarter than they give him credit for, and he waits until he has confirmation from Dee that they're all at the hospital before he returns to rob them again.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Charlie not-so-subtly threatens Hwang by pretending to stretch and revealing the gun hidden in his waistband.
  • Shout-Out: Mac compares himself and Dennis to The Hardy Boys when they decide to investigate the crime themselves.
  • Skewed Priorities: After shooting Charlie in the head, Dennis is initially reluctant to drive him to the hospital because he doesn't want to get blood on his car seats. Even after agreeing to do it, he suggests that they put a bag over his head.
