Recap / It Lives Within Chapter 23 It Lives

Go To

The Grand Finale of the It Lives series.

Tropes:

  • Badass Boast: In the Judas Kiss ending, Rowan gives an utterly epic one to whoever visited them and either Noah or Devon (depending on who survived the events of the first book):
Rowan: (after Noah/Devon failed to assassinate them) I'm only going to say this once. Do not try this again. It will not end well for you. I'm not one of your little witches. You cannot kill me anymore than you can burn up the ocean with a lit match. I am older than the mountains and vaster than the seas. You think I use the Power? I am the Power. This body's nothing more than an angler's lamp. I have slept through kings falling an dynasties dying. I could blink and you would cease to exist.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Both the Blood and Shadow endings.
    • The Blood ending has Rowan leave Westchester for good with their love interest (if they had one) and move to California (Amalia, Abel, or Jocelyn), Colorado (no love interest), or Las Vegas (Lincoln), depending on their love interest, where they settle down and try to live a normal life. However, they continue to be plagued by nightmares, but as time goes on, they will slowly heal, the nightmares will become less frequent, and they'll eventually not think about the horrors they've seen anymore.
    • The Shadow ending has Rowan sacrifice their humanity and Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence so the Power can be healed (and optionally separated from the world completely). Their friends will be left to mourn them, and their love interest (if they had one) will have a scene detailing how they are living without Rowan, but the Power has been healed, and their friends can live free of monsters and Horrors, all thanks to them.
  • Downer Ending: If Rowan died, Matthias wins and gets to walk away after everything he did, all the people at the carnival die, and their friends will be left to mourn them.
  • Ending Memorial Service: Unless you're on the Judas Kiss route, Devon and Noah host a memorial for those they lost over the course of the It Lives series (with Noah cooking for them all).
  • Finale Title Drop: This, the final chapter in the It Lives series, is called "It Lives".
  • Food End: Unless you're on the Judas Kiss route, this chapter concludes the stories of nearly all of the It Lives cast as they eat barbequed food during a memorial for those they lost over the series.
  • Golden Ending: The happiest possible ending has every character from all three books alive, Rowan and Devon having forgiven Jocelyn, a high relationship will all four love interests, Amalia's college records fixed, Lincoln and Abel having repaired their friendship, a cure for the Horrors having been found, Rowan choosing to remain as they are and not merge (as both the Blood and Shadow endings are bittersweet), and Rowan in a happy relationship with one of their four love interests. Achieving all this results in an extra final scene where Rowan walks to the woods of Westchester and feels the Power all around them, acknowledging that the Power can do wonders for everyone...
All it needs is someone to protect it. And you're happy to be the one who's crazy enough to try.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: A double whammy for Rowan in the "Judas Miss" route. After siding with Matthias in the previous chapter, only to be dumped once they became fully human, and retaliating by killing Matthias, Rowan completes the ritual and takes its Power at the start of this chapter (as opposed to the power deciding to punish Matthias in the normal Blood route)... but then Luis, having overheard Rowan and Matthias' conversation, calls Rowan out for planning to betray their friends, much to the disappointment of the other characters (whose relationship scores all drop to 0), and Noah or Devon (whoever became Redfield), who Rowan and Matthias had initially planned to sacrifice in the former's place, tell Rowan to get out of Westchester and never come back.
  • We Used to Be Friends: If Amalia left at the end of Chapter 17 and did not return, and Rowan didn't merge in the previous chapter (thereby choosing to stay in Westchester), they will visit Amalia one last time, but she will not be happy to see Rowan.
    • If Rowan fixes Amalia's college records, but Amalia's relationship was less than 75, she says this:
Amalia (sad): Look, Rowan, I'm thankful for the time we spent together, but you're not the person I thought you were. You just...you were not a very good friend to me and I wish you the best, I really do. But I just don't think I want you in my life anymore. I hope you can respect that.
    • If Rowan didn't fix Amalia's college records however, Amalia is far more angry towards Rowan:
Amalia (angry): I'm going to have to study an extra three years, all because you didn't want me to leave. What is there to be said? What kind of friend does that? You were my best friend, but I wasn't important to you at all.
