Tropes

  • Adaptation Deviation: The episode is actually a mashing of two separate events where Mark had to deal with the Reanimen. Also Eve's decision to become a humanitarian focused hero happens a lot sooner than in the comics.
  • Asshole Victim: Downplayed. The "Frat-Bro Douche" voiced by Justin Roiland, who propositions some girls to have sex with him after revealing he's the son of a price-gouging pharmaceutical CEO is the first person we see being turned into a Reanimen. That being said, it's still horrifying what happens to him, and he clearly didn't deserve what he got.
  • Betrayal Insurance: The Mauler Twins head to The Immortal's grave for "insurance" during The Stinger, in case Robot goes back on his word for compensating them for their secret project.
  • Beyond the Impossible: D.A. Sinclaire claims that he removed Rick's ability to feel emotion during the proceedure to make him a Reaniman. However, the sight of Sinclaire cutting into William's arm causes Rick to start crying, before tearing out a chip in the back of his head and helping Invincible fight off the other two Reanimen. That said, he shows a major inhibition to feel emotion after and before that point, indicating that his emotional reaction remained, even if his emotions didn't.
  • Driven to Suicide: The Reanimen that fights Mark impales himself after seeing what he has become.
  • Easily Forgiven: Taking Eve's words to heart, Amber decides to forgive Mark and attempt to fix their relationship. Sadly, it doesn't last.
  • Healing Factor: While Monster Girl can heal herself, her monster form is too damaged to do so on her own. Robot gathered the necessary ingredients needed to jump-start it while she is recovering at the GDA clinic.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: William manages to help Rick remember and fight against the programming, allowing him to help Invincible beat the other Reanimen.
  • Implied Death Threat: Without saying it, Nolan shows that he knows that Art knows that he murdered the Guardians of the Globe. As they're having a beer, Nolan notes that Art seems a little nervous, with Nolan telling him that he starts to realize that "all the time in the world" is gone. When the latter hands Art another beer, he clarifies that he wanted to make sure that they still have a good relationship and effortlessly pops the cap off the bottle with his thumb while the camera is positioned as if Nolan popped Art's head off. As Art grabs the beer, Nolan takes more time than necessary to let go of the bottle as if communicating that Art is only alive because Nolan allowed it.
Nolan: Like you said, never piss off your tailor, right?
  • Internal Reveal:
    • After Mark (as Invincible) saves William from the cyborg by catching his punch, William gets a good look at his face and realizes that Mark is Invincible.
    • With help from Art, Debbie gets concrete evidence that Nolan was the one who killed the Guardians.
  • Ironic Echo: Art ends an embarrassing Noodle Incident with "Never piss off your tailor." Nolan himself ends his Implied Death Threat to Art with the same sentence.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks:
    • Mark continues to hide his Superhero life from Amber, ruining his chance for a fresh start.
    • Art now knows his friend Nolan is a murderer. When Debbie tells him to not tell anyone, he makes it clear that he's too scared to anyway.
  • Mood Whiplash: As Art is about to leave his workplace, Nolan appears behind him, looking like he's about to kill him for finding out he killed the Guardians of the Globe... then he whips out a six-pack of beer.
  • Noodle Incident: Nolan and Art laugh over an incident where the latter forces someone to dress in plaid for the president, with Art remarking that that should be a lesson to "Never piss off your tailor."
  • One-Scene Wonder: Justin Roiland as Doug Cheston, the stereotypical rich college frat boy.
  • On the Rebound: Downplayed. Hours after breaking up with Mark, Amber begins showing interest in the nerdy frat boy who invited her to a house party...
    • Hopeless Suitor: ... until he offhandedly mentions his girlfriend. Amber's expression is one of internal screaming.
  • Precision F-Strike: When Debbie confronts Nolan with killing the Guardians and instead of talking Nolan just brushes it off by calling her drunk, Debbie loses it and tosses the wine bottle in her hand at him. Given the shocked reaction, it's probably the angriest Nolan has ever seen his wife.
    Debbie: Fuck you, Nolan.
  • Pet the Dog: Nolan letting Art live even though Art now knows he murdered the guardians.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Mark and William track down the mastermind behind the missing college students and take him down. While they rescue Rick and the others, however, they are made into cyborgs, with a handful of vital organs removed, though Cecil promises the GDA will try to restore their humanity as best they can. On a personal level, Mark loses his chance to make up with Amber.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Atom Eve makes good on her plan to leave her parents and live on her own.
  • Stalker Shot: After Debbie and Art discover Nolan was the one who killed the Guardians and Debbie tells Art to keep this a secret, the scene cuts to outside Art's shop where the camera zooms out to reveal a shot of Nolan's foot while he hovers in the air, and then the camera shows Nolan looking furious as he sees Debbie's car outside Art's shop.
  • Too Much Information: William tries to appeal to Reaniman!Rick by shouting about their history together, including the amazing sex they had.
    D.A. Sinclair: Oh. That's a tad personal.
  • Tranquil Fury: After Debbie makes it clear she knows Nolan killed the Guardians and won't be fooled anymore, Nolan breaks the wine bottle he caught and then punches the wall before slumping down, without changing his expression.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Black Samson nearly dies after a failed Magical Defibrillator, but managed to heal effectively when it works once more on its own. He believes he's feeling as good as he did before he lost his powers, though it may be a sign that he is regaining them.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: D. A. Sinclair's plot is kidnapping people and subjecting them to this.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Amber delivers this to Mark when he lies about getting the police during the cyborg attack after disappearing, not knowing he was Invincible, who was trying to stop him. With this, his chance of a renewed relationship with her is all but shot.
Amber: Eve was wrong about you... and so was I.
    • This becomes something of a Kick the Dog moment after the events of episode 7, when Amber reveals she knew Mark was a superhero for weeks. In other words, she knew that Mark saved William, but still shamed him for running away and broke up with him.
