Before the group reunites with the Apex, Hazel insists that they hold an important ceremony, much to an impatient Simon's frustration.

Tropes:

  • Animate Inanimate Object: The Campfire Car is full of living camping supplies, pinecones, and rocks.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • When Hazel learns that she's a "train person", the first thing she asks Grace is if she hates her. This causes Grace to start doubting her philosophy and mindset towards the denizens.
    • Grace gives Simon one in her What the Hell, Hero? moment on him, but it doesn't stick.
  • Blunt "Yes": Grace gets fed up with Simon's behavior and outright gives him an order as the leader of the Apex. Simon, clearly surprised and a little bit hurt, asks if she's pulling rank on him, and she responds with this.
  • Breather Episode: After the ending of the previous episode, this episode is about Hazel and Grace bonding and them having a funeral for Tuba.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The large rock Tuba carried in the satchel is used as a makeshift "corpse" for her funeral.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Grace, Simon and Hazel passing by Amelia, which is when Simon's sensor starts picking up that huge cluster of numbers. Amelia then enters the same car the trio just entered asking what they've been doing to the cars.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Grace and Simon pass by Amelia on their way to the next car, which is when Simon's Number detector starts blinking...
  • Five Stages of Grief: Hazel falls into Denial and Bargaining over Tuba's death and learns to move onto Acceptance.
  • Foreshadowing: The stages of grief Hazel fell into are denial and bargaining; now who else on the train previously fell into those?
  • Kick the Dog: Simon continues to be a douche as he tries to deny Hazel the chance to give Tuba a funeral and only backs down when Grace insists on allowing it, and talks about how Hazel will love being with other passengers, all while not noticing Hazel's total disgust at him.
  • Mood Whiplash: After the eulogy and Grace and Hazel hugging, Hazel changes the mood by stating she has to go to the bathroom.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Grace slowly realizes that she has been a horrible person on treating the denizens as lesser to the passengers when she talks about how Tuba was kind and caring.
  • Secret-Keeper: Grace decides that she'll keep Hazel's transformation secret from Simon.
  • Tempting Fate: When Simon sees how that big blip of numbers on his sensor is behind him, he's in disbelief on they could've just passed them. Cue Amelia sticking her head back into the car.
  • Together in Death: Hazel hopes that Tuba can be with her children now since she passed on.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: As it turns out, even Hazel didn't know about her not being human. Once she notices, she panics before she's able to shift back, unsure of what's going on and why she's suddenly got scales and a shell.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • Hazel remains in this mode towards Simon for pretty much the whole episode as a result of him killing Tuba. The "tranquil" part is primarily because she needs to stay calm and avoid getting upset so she doesn't transform into her turtle form; she and Grace both fear that Simon will kill her like he killed Tuba if he learns that she's a denizen.
    • One particular moment crops up near the end of the episode, where Simon insensitively encourages Hazel to get over Tuba and promises to make Hazel a character in his book when they get back to the Apex. Unsurprisingly, this does not make her feel better at all, but after silently glaring for a long moment, she finally musters up some fake enthusiasm about it.
  • Wham Shot: The person that Grace, Simon and Hazel pass by on their way to the next car is Amelia.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Downplayed. Simon gets on the receiving end of one from Grace for his callous disregard for Hazel's feelings, but it fails to stick.
