Recap / iCarly (2021) S1 E1 "iStart Over"

Go To

Carly has moved back to Seattle and is living in the same building with her new friend, Harper. Spencer has become rich after accidentally creating a thought-provoking sculpture. Freddie has been divorced twice and has shared custody of his stepdaughter, Milicent. Carly expects her boyfriend to ask her to start a web show with her, but is devastated when he wants to break up with her. After falling into a depression, she realizes she misses making content. Freddie, who is still living with Mrs. Benson, suggests that they start up iCarly again. As Sam is in a biker gang, Carly realizes she can do it by herself. With Freddie and Spencer vowing to help, she restarts iCarly - but for adults - and receives rave reviews and high viewership.

Tropes:

  • Continuity Cavalcade: Carly's looking through a box of old iCarly props and finds some old favorites:
    • The mustache from "The Cowboy and the Idiot Farm Girl Who Thinks the Cowboy's Mustache Looks Like A Squirrel". Carly looks at it and then says "It really does look like a squirrel."
    • The Sacks (parodies of Snuggies). Freddie notes that Sam superglued the drawstring closed on his and left him in the studio all night. Spencer says that he wouldn't stop screaming.
    • George, the bra that told ghost stories. It's still too big for Carly to wear.
    • Finally, she uncovers the crib used in the Baby Spencer bits (which she thought might still be up there). Spencer can only mutter a frustrated "Damn it!"
  • Foreshadowing: Spencer mentions that he sold his Freddie marionette to Nora Dershlit. Guess who shows up in the very next episode.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When Harper insults Spencer’s statue, he replies that since it’s art, not everyone has to like it. He then demands to know why she doesn’t like it.
  • Infodump: Carly's explanations of what she's been up to since she left for Italy (she went to college for a while, had a brief stint in radio and hosted Italian QVC) are done in a very unnatural way, possibly for comedy's sake.
  • Ma'am Shock: Carly said she panic-bought the anti-aging products she's advertising on the new iCarly because a guy at the 7-11 called her "ma'am".
  • New Old Flame: Luke, the college professor Carly briefly dated after Beau dumped her. They know each other from camp when they were younger, but the audience have never seen this. It doesn't work out, as he took Carly to a restaurant that only serves whey. Not whey protein powder, actual whey liquid.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Spencer’s reaction to realizing he’ll have to be Baby Spencer again.
  • Put on a Bus: Sam’s absence is explained as her being a part of a biker gang, the Obliterators.
  • Time Skip: The decade between this and the original show aside, there is a one-month time skip between the first scene and the rest of the episode, as Carly is depressed after breaking up with Beau.
  • The Unreveal: Luke asks Carly about her mom. She dodges the question and changes the subject.
