Tropes

  • Bad "Bad Acting": The so-called pirate movies are really home-made No Budget movies that have untalented and unskilled actors dressed up as pirates.
Detective Tragg: Well, there's nothing illegal about bad acting.
  • The Bet: Sam and Freddie's disagreement over the "MPEG" acronym. Whoever is wrong gets a tattoo of the winner's face. Sam was correct, thus Freddie got a tattoo of her face.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Spanky's son, who eats Spencer’s cake that he was going to give to Socko for his birthday.
  • Butt-Monkey: Spencer has this occur to him in the episode. He gets antagonized by Spanky and his son.
  • Caught on Tape: The detectives show up at the Shay's apartment because the video of "Crazy Fruit Dude" during the iCarly webcast caught footage of the convenience store guy walking behind him while carrying a seemingly suspicious package.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Spencer gets his revenge on Spanky. He tricks him into handcuffing himself, and then he pulls out a broom to start spanking him right in front of Spanky's own son, who cheers Spencer on.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: With the iCarlys annoyed by the cops all week and that they haven't bothered to get any proof about the pirated DVDs, Sam simply states why don't they just get the evidence themselves. This gives Carly the idea to enter the store undercover and interrogate the owner.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite how awful he is, Spanky ultimately becomes fed up with his son's behavior and lets Spencer trap him in a large plastic tube.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: When Mrs. Benson spots Freddie with his tattoo exposed, she calls him "Fredward" Benson with seething rage. This confuses Carly, who thought his first name sounded strange.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Freddie believes the acronym "MPEG" stands for "Mega Pixel Electronic Gallery" when Sam thinks it's "Moving Picture Experts Group". Turns out, the latter is correct.
  • Groin Attack: When a mournful Spencer bemoans over the ruined cake for Socko, Spanky’s son gives him No Sympathy and sacks him in his privates with a baking ladle.
  • Jerkass: The two cops (Spanky and Detective Tragg) are absolute cruel jerks who hang out around Carly and Spencer's apartment room against their own will, eat up all their food, ruin the web show, use Spencer's own credit card to buy a pizza and sleep there.
  • Mondegreen Gag: The cops infiltrate the Shay's apartment to spy on the store because they thought the owner sold pirated movies (illegal copies). Turns out, he actually sells pirate movies — homemade movies about pirates which are not illegal at all.
  • Oh, Crap!: Freddie has this reaction when his mother comes to the Shay residence and spots him, in an undershirt that doesn’t have sleeves, exposing his tattoo to her.
  • Only Sane Man: Downplayed with Detective Tragg. He still does stuff like use Spencer's credit card to buy pizza, but he's also visibly annoyed by Spanky's antics.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Turns out, the cheap movies are not pirated — they're actually pirate movies.
  • Snipe Hunt: In an attempt to prevent her mother from getting him to the community pool, which would thus expose his tattoo to her, Freddie refuses by telling her that he needs a hard-to-find Cloud Block so his chest doesn't get exposed to clouds. Unfortunately for him, Mrs. Benson went seven different drug stores and eventually found a large tube of the substance.
  • Special Guest: Curtis Armstrong as the shop owner.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: The cops to the Shays. And the cops aren't even doing any real police work, they're lazing around eating their food, watching their TV and even spending their money.
