Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 19 I Got Detention

Go To

When Sam gets detention on the night of iCarly's "50th Webshow Spectacular", Carly and Freddie do their best to get detention as well, so they can host the show from there.

Meanwhile, Spencer builds an enormous cup of coffee but drops his phone in it.

Tropes:

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Freddie is in the middle of chastising Sam for getting detention on the night of the 50th webshow, but he stops himself to be interested in a bowl of popcorn that Carly just brought over.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Mr. Howard gets hit in the face by a football and falls down the stairs because of Sam. A crowd gathers around him in concern and Gibby says, "Oh my god!" in shock. But he was actually saying it because he saw a poster advertisement of iCarly’s 50th webshow spectacular.
  • Can't Get in Trouble for Nuthin': Initially, Carly and Freddie fail in their attempts to get into detention. They are frustrated by this, and wonder how Sam manages to do it, saying she makes it seem so easy. Carly eventually does get one unintentionally after slamming her locker too hard by Mr. Howard.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Why several of Carly and Freddie's plans to get detention fail.
    • Carly gets off for pulling the fire alarm because the microwave in the teacher's lounge burst into flames just seconds before she did it.
    • Freddie tries breaking Principal Franklin's phone, only for Principal Franklin to have recently gotten a phone that was indestructible.
  • Detention Episode: Sam gets detention and Carly and Freddie try to as well.
  • Door Slam of Rage: Carly angrily slams her locker door when none of the gang's attempts to get detention work. Mr. Howard, who happened to be nearby, gives her detention for such.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The PearPhone is rectangular like a normal iPhone. Later on, they would be pear-shaped.
  • Easily Forgiven: Except for Mr. Howard, all of Carly and Freddie's very obvious attempts to get into detention are easily thwarted or even forgiven by the teachers.
  • Irony: Just after Carly complains, "Why is it so hard to get detention?!", she slams her locker in fury, which Mr. Howard hears and gives her detention for.
  • I Was Just Joking: When Sam says that there's no way Carly and Freddie can get her out of detention, Freddie jokingly says that they should instead get themselves INTO detention. Carly actually thinks this is a good idea, as they can host the webshow there together. Freddie is initially shocked that she took him seriously.
  • Magic Countdown: After Carly gets detention for Mr. Howard catching her for slamming a locker, she realizes school will be over in three minutes. However, only thirty seconds pass between when she says that and the time the bell rings.
  • Milestone Celebration: An In-Universe example. This episode celebrates the 50th webcast of iCarly.
  • Out of Focus: Spencer usually gets his own subplot if the iCarly three are on their own adventure, but for this episode he gets limited screen time and hardly any lines.
  • Poke the Poodle: Freddie's first plan to get into detention is to steal the teacher’s stapler. Needless to say, Sam is not impressed and the teacher is not angry at him at all.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Principal Franklin refuses to expel Sam on the grounds that what she did was an accident, but since she was still breaking school rules, he give her detention. He even watches the iCarly's 50th webshow spectacular at home despite being aware that they're filming it from detention.
  • Right Behind Me: Just as Mr. Howard starts ranting about how "I don't care what Principal Franklin thinks!", Principal Franklin himself walks in from open door behind him and asks, "You don't?", to which Mr. Howard affirms it as he turns around, only to give an Oh, Crap! reaction when he sees who it is.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Carly and Freddie's attempts to get detention only result in minor successes, specifically Carly pulled a false fire alarm which happened to be right when the microwave in the teacher's lounge caught fire.
  • Unishment: Carly gets detention from Mr. Howard, which she wanted. He is at first confused by this, but she feigns sorrow.
  • We Need a Distraction: When Mr. Howard hears too much noise from the webcast, he finally decides to sit in the room to survey detention. This causes Freddie to notify the bad beatboxer from the pilot to create a lot of noise in the downstairs hallway.
