Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 18 I Promote Techfoots

Go To

iPromote Techfoots is the eighteenth episode in the first season of iCarly.

Carly, Sam and Freddie are called in by the president of Daka Shoes to advertise their newest release, the Techfoot, and are offered a large sum of money in return. Unfortunately, the shoes turn out to be terrible, but the iCarly gang cannot get out of their contract.

Meanwhile, Spencer falls asleep on the bus and misses his stop, so he searches for a better way to travel.

Tropes:

  • Agony of the Feet: As part of the problems people have while wearing techfoots, they hurt their feet, as Sam complains.
  • Army of Lawyers: The Daka shoes president brings one with him when going to the Shay residence to complain about the iCarly webshow that promoted the Techfoot in a "positive" way.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Spencer, not wanting to take the bus, decides to build himself a bike for him to ride. After he finished it, Carly and Freddie point out that he has a bike hanging above the refrigerator in the kitchen. His response is, "Well, too late, now."
  • Harmless Electrocution: Since Carly walked into a puddle while wearing a pair of techfoots, they end up shocking her. While her hair is certainly very frizzy, she otherwise looks just fine.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: Spencer complains at the beginning about the Canadian bacon he got only being sliced ham. But at the end, he admits that he likes it when claiming that he’ll go to Canada with his new motorcycle.
  • Loophole Abuse: The iCarlys' contract with Daka shoes states that they only have to mention positive things about the Techfoots. The iCarlys get around this by cheerfully showing on their next webshow how the Techfoot can break open on the front when wet to make your feet air out, wipe out the content on your computer hard drive with the wi-fi setting "like a magic eraser", and burst on fire when using the toe-warmer which can be used for roasting weenies.
  • Made of Explodium: When Carly, in a fit of anger, throws a pair of techfoots that shocked her, the shoes explode right in the trash can.
  • Negatives as a Positive: The iCarly crew get out of their contract by highlighting all of the problems with Techfoot, but presenting them as if they are good features.
  • Never My Fault: Spencer insists on never taking the bus again after he fell asleep and ended up in Canada. Carly points out it's not their fault he fell asleep. Spencer then subverts the trope pointing out that a week before, he encountered a hobo eating chili with his hands and spilling some on him.
  • Series Continuity Error: Freddie says at the beginning of the episode that they just broke a record on iCarly for most number of live views: over 300,000. However, a previous episode, "iSpy A Mean Teacher", showed a new record of over 500,000 live viewers.
  • Understatement: When the iCarlys complain to the Daka shoe company owner about the issues with the techfoots.
Manager: Well, you know, when you try out a new shoe, it can have a few minor problems.
    Sam: "Minor?"
Freddie: What would be a MAJOR problem?
Carly: If they came to life in the middle of the night and ate your family?!
    Manager: [chuckles] I live alone.
  • The Unintelligible: Sonja, the chef who Sam hires using her Techfoot money, has this, such as referring to blueberry muffins as "blubbery moofins".
