When Robin's mom arrives in time for the wedding, her reminiscing starts to get to Robin. Meanwhile, Marshall, Ted and Barney try to find out what happened when Lily left the night before.
This episode provides examples of:
- Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Ted being Entertainingly Wrong about Lily when pulling a pregnancy test from a flower pot instead of the expected cig butt.Ted: And sure enough, if I dig around… I am all but guaranteed to find… a pregnancy test.
- Call-Back: Once again, the Mosby boys are here to solve a mystery. And once again, Ted is 95% right. And once again the Captain lucking foves boats.
- Comically Missing the Point:
- When Ted digs in the flower pot, expecting to find a cigarette butt, he finds a pregnancy test instead. Billy Zabka's response is to ask "You can smoke those?"
- Also this scene earlier when Ted asks everyone on The Captain's living room on what Lily does after she and Marshall needed a timeout and some space:Marshall: Cry?Barney: Masturbate?Billy Zabka: Karate?The Captain: Go sailing?
- This exchange a little later when Ted questions everyone again that they don't have a car and they go to a nearby convenience store for a cigarette (actually a pregnacy test). Their answers:Billy Zabka: Dirt bike.Marshall: I can walk that far.Barney: Masturbate.The Captain: Take a boat.Ted: A boat? Dude, she got in your car remember?
- And this gem right before mentioning the flower pot. Ted then asks everyone that they're Lily, and she had just smoked on their boss' powder room, and where to discard it:Ted: ...Flush it? Throw it out the window?Marshall: No, she wouldn't do any of those things, she's an environmentalist.Ted: Put it in your purse?Billy Zabka: Marshall would find it there.Ranjit: Throw it in the trash can.Becky: The Captain would find it there.The Captain: Hide it in a boat.Ted: A boat? Why would...?The Captain: I don't know, I just like boats.
- Characterization Marches On: Becky was previously shown to be perky and inappropriately cutesy around everyone. By the time the gang see her at The Captain's house, she acts much calmer.
- Funny Background Event: When Ted finds the pregnancy test inside the pot, The Captain looks briefly at Becky, who quickly denies it's hers with a gesture.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Ted mentions how long the last day and a half has been. Twenty episodes long, to be exact.
- Like Parent, Like Spouse: Robin's mother tells her experience about her husband, whose traits and antics resemble precisely that of Barney's. The only thing that's different is that Barney is a hugger.
- Meaningful Name: Marshall and Lily name their daughter Daisy, after the flower growing in the pot where she hid the pregnancy test.
- It also follows along a "flower-theme" naming scheme: Lily, Daisy.
- One Drink Will Kill the Baby: A flashback to Lily placing her "Kennedy Package" order with Linus extends the scene to reveal she asked him to bring her non-alcoholic drinks as she wasn't yet sure if she was pregnant or not.
- Pregnancy Test Plot: Ted and the Gang set out to The Captain's house to look for Lily and find out why she went there after a fight with Marshall. Since Ted has noticed Lily being stressed out over the wedding weekend, he assumed that she was smoking. Upon taking wild guesses (which includes boats as three separate answers from the Captain) and some thorough investigations, Ted confidently concludes that what he will find inside the daisy pot is —Ted: ...a pregnancy test...
- The Reveal:
- Lily is pregnant with her second child.
- In a
Deleted Scene, after almost a decade, we finally find out all about the pineapple. The night that Ted was super drunk, he stole a pineapple from The Captain's porch.
- Right for the Wrong Reasons: Ted goes to The Captain's house to find out why Lily went there. Ted had been investigating on Lily's strange patterns lately. She ordered the Kennedy package, hadn't been drunk or hungover, had been stressed out, stopped over to a convenience store after her fight with Marshall, and used The Captain's bathroom. Ted had immediately guessed that she had been smoking and threw all the evidence in a daisy pot. Ted was right though, except that instead of a cigarette, it was a pregnancy test.Barney:[amused] Lily peed on it. You touched it. Gross.
- Unusual Euphemism: He moored his dinghy in her lagoon.
- Wham Shot: The pregnancy stick. "I told you guys I could keep a secret."
