Don and Robin plan to move in together, prompting Ted and Barney to realize neither is over Robin yet. Marshall and Lily realize they enjoy sleeping in separate beds.

Upon arriving in Don's apartment, Marshall and Lily observe that Don also has twin beds, but are surprised to discover that sleeping on separate beds was the reason Don and his ex-wife's marriage eventually failed and resulted in a divorce. Barney, in a bid to outdo Don and impress Robin, first eats a jalapeno, and when this fails, switches to wasabi. Ted wound up having to take him to his apartment.

Later, both Barney and Ted started to drunk-dial Robin, later winding up into Don's apartment just before the two were about to leave for work, asking her to get back together. Robin is visibly embarrassed, but Don took it in stride and made them sleep it off at the couch, and later at the twin beds in Don's room.

Back at the apartment, Ted, annoyed once again at Robin for leaving the empty milk carton at the fridge, storms into her room to tell her off, only to walk into a completely empty room: Robin has already moved in with Don and took all her things with her; all that's left behind is the blue French horn that Ted stole for her on their first date.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Ted and Barney get drunk and start acting like children whilst arguing about Robin.
  • Amicable Exes: Don becomes uncomfortable after finding out Robin dated both Ted and Barney yet still hangs out with them. Sure enough, during one drunken night they both get jealous and go to Robin's apartment to beg her to take them back. The incident is the turning point that convinces Robin to move in with Don.
  • Call-Back: Robin forgetting to throw away empty milk cartons is what caused her and Ted to backslide in "Benefits". Also, Robin's past relationships with Ted and Barney cause friction between her and Don.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The conversation between Lily and Marshall after they have sex in Marshall's twin bed is similar to a stereotypical conversation following a one-night stand.
Marshall: That was great, but I have to be up early tomorrow.
Lily: So you're just kicking me out?
Marshall: You knew what this was.
  • Foreshadowing: While Ted and Barney get into a drunken discussion of who deserved to get Robin back the most, Barney says "How about this? We share her. I'll take her until she's 40, and then you can have her after all". Much later in the Season 9 finale, if we take in consideration the first ending, that's exactly what happens.
  • Gilligan Cut: After a drunk fight over Robin, Barney says he should leave before he and Ted do something they would regret. Cut to Ted and Barney standing outside Don's apartment declaring their love for Robin.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed. Barney acts like an obnoxious jerk towards Don after deciding he wants Robin back. Ted also gets in on the act later in the episode.
  • The Maiden Name Debate: While drunk, Ted and Barney bicker if Robin should have been "Robin Mosby" or "Robin Stinson"
Ted: "Ted Scherbatsky"! I'll take her name. I don't care.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Don assumed Ted was gay because of his calligraphy hobby, watching Project Runway, the gourmet cooking and the high pitched Squee. Robin neglected to correct him so she wouldn't have to tell Don she dated Ted.
  • Oh, Crap!: Lily and Marshall had this reaction. At first they were excited when they decided to have twin beds, but that changed when Don told them that he and his ex-wife also did this shortly before the divorce.
  • Split-Screen Phone Call: While drunk, Barney pretends to go to the bathroom and secretly calls Robin. Unbeknownst to him, Ted is also calling Robin on the other line and this trope plays straight with the camera viewing them in three separate angles. Then, Barney attacks Ted after Robin tells him that Ted is also calling her.
  • Wham Shot: The final shot of the episode is Ted standing in Robin's empty room, the blue French horn in the corner.
