Mavis and her friends learn the true meaning of Halloween.

Tropes:

  • Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?:
Council Bat: Alerts are goin’ off like never before, sir! It can only mean one thing...
Dracula: Two for one rat and fish tacos in the cafeteria?
  • Audience? What Audience?: Dracula’s Evil Laugh after he’s finished introducing the show gets interrupted by Frank who asks him who he’s talking to.
Frank: Seriously, who’re you talking to?
Dracula: Forget it! That’s it! Start the show already.
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out:
    • When Mavis trick-or-treats for the first time at Kitty’s house, it seems at first like Kitty is about to yell at and/or attack her, but she just ends up telling her how adorable her “costume” is.
    • Zigzagged. When Drac catches Mavis out of the hotel on Halloween, he says her name menacingly as he looms towards her...and then pulls her into a big hug. He does lecture her immediately afterwards though.
  • Control Freak: Aunt Lydia is so obsessed with decorum, that she even wants her hotel guests to panic in an orderly fashion.
  • Faux Horrific: Aunt Lydia threatens to punish Wendy and Pedro with a “human bubble bath.”
Pedro: I’ve heard the water isn’t even scalding, and the bubbles smell like peaches and kumquats!
Wendy: Who would invent such torture?
  • Food as Bribe: To get Pedro to come to her secret meeting about sneaking out on Halloween, Mavis tells him there will be snacks and he’s none too happy to find out she was lying.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: As they’re already monsters, Mavis and her friends trick-or-treat as themselves.
Mavis: We look like human kids in costumes! We can roam around and be free!
  • Gilligan Cut: Hank’s response to Mavis’ idea to flush themselves down the toilet is a Rapid-Fire "No!". The next scene however, shows him sliding through the pipes with the rest of them.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: On the throbbing boil-like growth on Quasimodo’s nose. Mavis then accidentally pokes it and it disgustingly pops all over her.
  • Halloween Episode: Halloween is “the most dangerous night of the year” for monsters and Mavis wants to find out why.
  • Horror Host: Drac acts as one in the beginning of the episode as he introduces the story of Pumpkin Guts.
  • In Their Own Image: Pumpkin Guts wants to turn every monster into a jack-o-lantern, just like himself.
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: It turns out that when Drac was a young child, he was a curious little rebel just like his daughter.
Dracula: I understand your curiosity, Mavis. I was curious once too.
  • Look Behind You: Drac tricks the Council Bat into looking away so he can sneak out to go make sure Mavis is safe. The bat thinks he was talking about a painting on the wall, which turns out to be a human version of Canines Gambling in a Card Game.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: Hank’s shoe gets caught in the rapidly closing exit of the hotel’s plumbing...along with the foot it’s on. Luckily, he’s able to just pop the foot right off.
Hank: Good thing I always carry a spare!
  • Malaproper: Unfamiliar with the human tradition, Mavis says “stick of meat” instead of “trick or treat.”
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Drac uses Pete the zombie in a cape to trick the Council Bat into thinking he hasn’t left his post as Grand Vamp, despite the fact that he looks nothing like him. The bat buys it though, because he says Dracula’s Character Catchphrase - “Blah, blah blah.”
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Kitty before she carves up Pumpkin Guts:
    Kitty: Who wants pumpkin pie?
  • Pumpkin Person: Pumpkin Guts is a giant monster made out of pumpkins.
  • Real After All: Mavis thinks all the other monsters were lying about Halloween being a dangerous holiday, because she’s able to mingle with humans freely thanks to them thinking she’s in costume. However, it turns out that the real danger of Halloween isn’t the humans, it’s a monster called Pumpkin Guts.
  • Shout-Out: When Wendy tries to tell Aunt Lydia that the reason they’re out is because they got abducted by aliens, Pedro adds, “Aliens, yeah. Little blue guys. Uh, white hats. All with the same last name.”
  • T-Word Euphemism: All the monsters avoid saying “the H-word” (Halloween) and chaos breaks out when Mavis says it for the first time.
Aunt Lydia: We do not say the H-word.
  • Toilet Teleportation: Mavis’ plan to escape the hotel is for the group to flush themselves down the toilet. As disgusting as it sounds, it actually works.
  • Visual Pun: Quasimodo is about to say the dreaded word, “Halloween,” so Aunt Lydia hits him with a spell that literally zips his lips closed.
  • Voiceover Letter: Mavis gets a letter from her dad and it’s read by a shadow of Drac that appears on the wall next to her.
  • Watch Out for That Tree!: Dracula, as a bat, gets distracted when he spots Mavis and her friends trick-or-treating in the human village and flies into a tree.
