The Heart of a Saturday Night

Directed By: Whit Stillman
Written By: Henry Bromell

A support group for victim's families meets up. Among them are Caroline (Rosanna Arquette), a woman whose husband was killed at the Waterfront, Jude (Chris Eigeman), a man whose wife was killed in a carjacking and whose baby daughter was in the car (though she was found), and Mr. and Mrs. Rath (Tom Quinn and Polly Holliday), a middle-aged couple whose teenage daughter was raped, killed, and dumped in an alley. Then Dr. Cox joins the meeting.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bar Brawl: Caroline's husband gets killed in one of these.
  • Color Wash: The scenes of the support group all are shot in bleached-out colors, while the flashback scenes are all shot on normal film.
  • Continuity Nod: Giardello is still haunted by the Lugo case, and decides to investigate the slaying at the Waterfront himself. Fortunately for Giardello's state of mind, he closes the case.
  • Flashback: The episode flashes back from the support group to show each individual case, investigated by Giardello (the Bar Brawl), Lewis and Munch (the carjacking), and Bayliss (the teenage girl).
  • He's Back!: A downplayed version, but Pembleton interviews the two witnesses Bayliss left in the aquarium for him to watch, and is able to get the name of the murder suspect in Bayliss' case for him.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Caroline tells Jude and the Raths while she's left by herself, Jude at least has his daughter and the Raths have each other, so that should give them some kind of peace. Though Jude and Mr. Rath had been at each other's throats (Mr. Rath thinks Jude is too opinionated, while Jude is upset Mr. Rath, who thinks nothing good about his daughter, never said he missed her), they both tell Caroline neither of them feel any kind of peace.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Mr. Rath accuses his wife of this - he thinks Mrs. Rath is always making excuses for their daughter's behavior, and overlooking the fact she was getting into trouble.
  • Really Gets Around: Caroline's husband was still chasing other women, and that's why he was killed, as he got into a fight with another patron over a woman. Caroline admits she hated her husband for that.
  • The Reveal: Dr. Cox tells the others her father was killed by a drunk driver (though as we know, he didn't die right away).
  • Shout-Out: Jude admits he was named after the song.
  • Titled After the Song: The title song from Tom Waits' album The Heart of Saturday Night.
