Go To

Movie Night

Manny and the tools decide to go to the movie theater and, after a vote determines that they’ll be watching The Wing And Nut Movie, sit down in the theater, ready to enjoy an hour of Wing and Nut’s humor. Unfortunately, just as the movie starts, the theater’s projector breaks down. Looks like someone’s got some repair work to do!

Tropes in “Movie Night” include:

  • Anthropomorphic Food: A living tub of popcorn and drinks cup appear on the movie theater’s screen before the movie starts, presumably as some sort of advertisement for the theater’s snacks.
  • Busman's Holiday: Manny goes to the theater purely to see a movie, but ends up having to fix the projector when it breaks down.
  • Call-Back: The Supremoguy movie has now gotten itself a sequel.
  • Continuity Nod: One movie poster seen in the background has an oddly familiar evil-looking gopher on it.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: One happens when Mr. Hitchberg gives Manny free tickets to the theater, and the tools realize they’ll have to vote on whether to see Supremoguy 2 or Sawdust Memories.
Dusty: Okay, who votes for more voting?
  • Everyone Looks Sexier if French: This is parodied with Sawdust Memories, a romance movie with a very French-looking saw on its poster.
  • Flying Saucer: A movie poster featuring one can be seen in the background of the theater.
  • Flynning: Felipe and Turner’s reenactment of “Tools In Space” contains a great deal of this. Not having swords handy, they flynn with their metal shafts. It’s exactly as dumb and hilarious as it sounds.
  • Heart Symbol: The film poster for Sawdust Memories is absolutely covered in these, befitting its status as a (presumably Stylistic Suck-filled) romance movie.
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: According to Pat, hammers are fond of these, so he tries to tell some to keep the theatergoers entertained. Unfortunately, he blanks after telling this one:
    Pat: Knock knock
    Audience: Who’s there?
    Pat: Wood.
    Audience: Wood who?
Pat: Would you lighten up? I’m trying to tell a joke!
  • Movie-Theater Episode: Natch. The tools and Manny go out for a relaxing night at the movies, but end up having to fix the theater’s projector when it breaks down.
  • Performance Anxiety: Rusty’s fear of public speaking comes up when Pat enlists him to tell jokes after the latter’s attempt to do so fails; Rusty gets over it fairly quickly when he discovers that people actually greatly enjoy his kind of humor.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: The cover of Sawdust Memories features a female piece of wood with a pink bow and a male saw with a dark blue handle.
  • Pushed in Front of the Audience: Pat does this to Rusty when the tools need to keep the theatergoers entertained and Pat’s joke-telling attempts fail; Rusty is freaked out at first but quickly discovers that his audience greatly enjoys his jokes.
  • Revenge of the Sequel: Felipe wants to watch Supremoguy 2: The Screwdriver Strikes Back.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In the background of the movie theater posters for Motorcycle Trout, a blatant parody of Finding Nemo, can be seen.
    • Tools In Space, which Felipe and Turner reenact a scene from, is an obvious spoof of Star Wars.
  • Show Within a Show:
    • The Supremoguy movie has apparently gotten itself a sequel, called Supremoguy 2: The Screwdriver Strikes Back.
    • Wing and Nut also have themselves a movie in The Wing And Nut Movie.
    • Dusty wants to see a flick called Sawdust Memories, which appears to be a romance movie involving a saw and a plank.
    • Felipe and Turner try to entertain bored theatergoers by reenacting a scene from something called Tools In Space, which is evidently the Handy Manny world’s take on Star Wars.
    • Various posters for other movies can be seen in the background of the theater- these include a Finding Nemo spoof called Motorcycle Trout, something about a UFO, and something with a very evil-looking gopher on the cover.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics:
    • The saw from Sawdust Memories has a mustache (somehow) and a blue handle, while his plank Love Interest has eyelashes and a pink bow on her “head”.
    • The living movie snacks seen in the theater’s food advert also have these- well, sort of. The soda cup is pink and has eyelashes, but viewers are just supposed to assume that the tub of popcorn is male due to lacking any obvious feminine characteristics.
  • Two Decades Behind: The episode was made in 2008, and yet Mr. Hitchberg’s movie theater shows films with old-fashioned reel-based projectors.
  • Variations on a Theme Song: Wing and Nut get yet another one that plays at the start of their movie, although the full version isn’t actually shown as the episode cuts to another scene before the song finishes.
    I’m Wing
    I’m Nut
    We’re hardware in a rut
We’ve gotta fix out house in a hurry!
    (So scurry!)
And sit down in your seat
    It’s gonna be real neat
(At this point, it cuts to outside the theater, after the movie has ended)

Cactus Manny

Sheet Rock Hills is going through a drought, and Mayor Rosa visits Manny and the tools to give them some tips on conserving water. Soon afterwards, Mrs. Portillo calls Manny with a job to do- with the drought, her garden is dying, and she wants him to take out her rosebushes and put in a brick pathway. But Manny can’t bear to see her give up her beloved garden, and with a quick visit to Kelly discovers a way to conserve water and let Mrs. Portillo keep on gardening.

”Cactus Manny” provides examples of:

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: At one point, Squeeze pronounces “suculent” as “suck-o-lent”.
  • Cactus Cushion: A small cactus falls on Turner’s head at the end of the episode. Fortunately for him, the cactus’s spines aren’t really able to stick in his plastic-and-metal body.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: One happens when a cactus falls on Turner’s head and he showcases his Deadpan Snarker tendencies.
    Manny: Are you okay, Turner?
Turner: Oh sure. I just thought I’d try on this cactus hat.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs:
Pat: Last one to the truck is a rusty nail!
  • Green Aesop: It’s important to do your part to conserve water.
  • Running Gag: Pat knocking over/hitting things that then land on Turner.
  • We Sell Everything: For some reason, Kelly’s HARDWARE store sells potted cacti.
