Recap / Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood E 43 Bite Of The Ant

Go To

Alphonse, May, and the others work out Scar's brother's research notes.

  • The Dog Bites Back: Marcoh hatches a plan to lure Envy north and then, even when it looks like Envy has foiled it, destroys Envy's One-Winged Angel form into a disgusting little maggot state. Then the group puts it in a jar and shakes it around.
  • Double Meaning: The episode title can refer to Marcoh, whom the homunculi (and Envy in particular) have derided as a weak fool, on top of their continual characterization of humans as no more important than insects crawling on the ground. There is also the bug-like Envy literally biting Yoki after being reduced to a larval form.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Envy seems shocked when nobody sans Marcoh bothers to help Yoki out of his Hostage Situation.
  • Eyecatch: Dr. Marcoh in the first, Olivier Mira and Alex Louis Armstrong in the second.
  • Grand Theft Me: Envy can seize control of a person's body through biting them even when reduced to a larva.
  • Hostage Situation: Envy, in his larval state, tries to take a member of the group hostage to bend them to his will. Unfortunately, they pick Yoki, making it easy for everyone to ignore the threats. (Marcoh, at least, was distressed and nearly collapsed after Yoki's release, but he was the only one who really cared.)
  • Hypocrite: Lampshaded by Marcoh, as he taunts Envy for feeling angry at being Out-Gambitted despite their delight in hurting others.
Marcoh: How does it feel to have the tables turned on you? It's not as much fun on that side, is it?
  • Idiot Ball: Hoo boy. At the end, Scar hands May the defeated Envy as a present for the Emperor. Ostensibly he just wants her out of the country before shit hit the fan, meta-wise it's because the plot needed both characters back in Central for the Final Battle, but it's still quite a leap considering that May had, just a few episodes ago, said that the Emperor should under no circumstances learn the only secret of "immortality" Envy can offer, the philosopher's stone. Plus, Envy is still a Manipulative Bastard and can potentially possess people.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: When explaining to Winry why he went through with such a dangerous plan, Dr. Marcoh says he set up the trap for Envy because he was inspired by the memory of her parents. Despite that it cost their lives, the Rockbells never swayed from their resolve to help people, and Dr. Marcoh wanted to live up to their courage.
  • Straw Hypocrite: Just before Olivier is introduced to the Mannequin Soldiers, General Gardner asks her why the third tenant, creating people with alchemy, is forbidden. Olivier answers that it's because it's unethical, only for Gardner to reveal that's a lie they came up with to ensure that no one can create their own army and challenge them, as well as hide the fact they're creating an army of their own.

Envy takes Yoki

Larva Envy tries to escape, by hijacking the body of Yoki. However the rest of the cast are not concerned, don't seem to care much about the poor guy. It isn't until Envy gives up, that it turns out they were bluffing.

How well does it match the trope?
