Recap / Friends S 6 E 7 The One Where Phoebe Runs

Go To

Chandler cleans the apartment to surprise Monica, but Ross warns him that Monica will kill him if he misplaces even one thing, sending Chandler into a panic. Rachel and Phoebe now live together and go jogging, but Rachel thinks Phoebe's run is ridiculous and is embarrassed to be seen with her. Joey's new roommate is a beautiful woman named Janine and he struggles not to flirt with her.

Tropes:

  • Animal Reaction Shot: The police horse Rachel runs into turns to look at her when she falls down.
  • Brick Joke:
    • When Monica almost enters the apartment early Chandler panics and makes up an excuse that Ross is naked. After Monica assures Chandler that he doesn't have to worry about her perfectionism and that she appreciates his gesture she immediately grabs some rubber gloves and asks if Ross sat anywhere while he was naked.
    • Joey gets a lot of advice about how to repel Janine from Chandler and Ross, with the former being thankful for being with Monica and the latter doubting his own prospects. In a later scene, Ross ignores Chandler, as he's having Comfort Food over how he repels women.
  • Funny Answering Machine: Rachel and Phoebe try to record a message for their answering machine by alternating who says each word. Phoebe is annoyed that Rachel gets all the "good words". Ultimately Phoebe records it all by herself.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Phoebe ends up embarrassed by Rachel's last run in the park (wherein she collides with a horse) and adopts a more measured run in the hopes people don't think they know each other.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Chandler moved everything in the apartment to clean the place as a surprise, but he ultimately dreads Monica freaking over this. While she does notice things aren't where they normally go, she deeply appreciates the gesture, tells him not to worry about this kind of stuff, and is only concerned about Ross sitting somewhere naked.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • When Chandler insists Monica won't care about some things not being put back in the same place, Ross asks if he just met the Obsessively Organized woman.
    • Chandler defends his "Ross is naked" plan by saying Monica's allowed to see him naked.
Ross: Why does anyone have to be naked?
  • Naked People Are Funny: While no one actually gets naked Chandler quickly makes up an excuse that Ross is naked to keep Monica out of the apartment for a while. Once Monica assures Chandler that she is touched by his gesture she immediately gets some rubber gloves to clean any of the surfaces the Ross may have sat on while naked.
  • Neat Freak: Ross thinks Monica will freak out about Chandler moving everything because of her neatness. When she gets home she immediately notices that everything's different but when she hears why Chandler did it she acknowledges that he was just trying to do something nice.
  • Noodle Incident: When lying about Ross being naked to ask for help with a guy problem, Monica asks if it's the same problem that Chandler has and says there's still some medicine in the bathroom. Ross asks an embarrassed Chandler what he had.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Joey says Ross and Chandler repel women all the time, Ross retorts that he's been married three times. Chandler's Sarcastic Clapping says it all.
  • Oh, Crap!: Joey after Janine is completely unfazed by his "How you doin'?" line.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: In-Universe. When Rachel compares Phoebe running to Kermit the Frog and The Six Million Dollar Man, Ross claims Monica used to have a crush on him. Due to lack of clarity, Rachel thinks Ross means the Six Million Dollar Man. He means Kermit.
Ross: She used to kiss his poster every night before bed.
Rachel: I used to do the same thing!
Monica: Did you also have his album "It's Not Easy Being Green"?
Rachel: Aw, Mon (leans over and kisses Monica on the cheek).
  • Roommate Drama: Rachel moves in with Phoebe, discovers a new and troublesome quirk about her and has to come to terms with it. Meanwhile Joey tries to see his hot new roommate as a roommate and not a prospective date.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Monica immediately notices things in the apartment are different, Ross heads for the door and doesn't look back.
  • Silly Walk: Phoebe has a silly run according to Rachel. She admits to Phoebe she is embarrassed to be seen with her because of it, to which Phoebe replies that she shouldn't care what strangers think and that Rachel should try to run like her (she also thinks Rachel's very normal run looks dumb). So Rachel tries Phoebe's way and has a blast (well, except for when she runs into a horse).
