Recap / Friends S 6 E 16 The One That Could Have Been Part Two

Go To

In part two of what could have been, Rachel decides to sleep with Joey. Ross and Carol agree to a threesome. Monica plans a romantic dinner with her boyfriend.

  • An Aesop: Life panned out the way it did for a reason, and even if you don't realize it, it was for the best.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: When Rachel wakes up hungover on Joey's couch she starts to ask if anything happened between them but he assures her it didn't, especially not after he saw her throw up.
  • Good Adultery, Bad Adultery: Although she accepts an invite to Joey's apartment and nearly goes through with sleeping with him, Rachel backs out at the last moment, and returns to her home and husband...only to catch him sleeping with the local dog walker.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: To help Monica feel less insecure, Chandler states that he's been inflating the number of past relationships he's had, eventually admitting that he's only actually slept with one other woman.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Phoebe finally learns that she was fired.
Phoebe: Look, I have made a lot of cash for this company! Okay? I am talking big bucks! Pesos! Yen! Rubles! You make one little mistake...
    Jack: You lost $13 million.
Phoebe: Oh, so this is all about money!
  • In Spite of a Nail: In The Tag, the group is exactly as they are in reality: at the coffee house. Furthermore, in the end Ross finds out his wife is gay, Rachel and Barry break up, Monica and Chandler fall in love, and Phoebe performs bizarre songs at the coffeehouse, just like in the original universe (save that Joey remains a successful actor, which he ends up becoming again a season later).
  • Jerkass Realization: Rachel has one when she wakes up from her hangover regarding her near-affair with Joey.
  • Lonely Together: In the end, Rachel and Ross start bonding in the coffee shop when they realize their spouses love someone else more than them.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: Chandler admits that he had one after he had sex with Monica so that she could lose her virginity, realizing that with his past relationships (or rather, one relationship) he just wanted to go off and spend time with his friends after spending the night with them/her but was already with a friend when he was with Monica.
  • The Patient Has Left the Building: Phoebe is so obsessed with getting back to work at the investment firm that she bullies another patient into helping her escape the hospital. Back at the firm, her boss informs her that he asked Ross to deliver the message that she's fired, and she starts to argue with him she gets another heart attack, and has to be rushed to the hospital again.
  • Satiating Sandwich: Ross admits that he eventually got bored watching Carol and Susan and went to make a sandwich. Joey immediately asks him for details about what he put in it.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Even when the threesome doesn't go as planned, Ross is genuinely ignorant of Carol's sexual preference until Rachel points out the obvious.
  • Special Edition Title: The titles feature different scenes than usual, including Chandler getting pooped on by a bird, Ross trying to romance Carol to her disinterest, and Monica as a chef while overweight.
  • Third Wheel: Ross slowly realizes that he was this during the threesome, or rather twosome, with Carol and Susan.
"You ever go to a party and think 'would anyone miss me if I weren't here?'"
  • A Threesome Is Hot: Ross and Carol attempt one with Susan to spice things up. Ross ends up getting sidelined pretty quickly; from his description, he had a brief moment with Carol at the start and was then reduced to watching as she and Susan did "a lot of stuff".
