Recap / Friends S 4 E 18 The One With Rachels New Dress

Go To

Rachel tries to seduce Joshua. Chandler and Joey fight over Phoebe naming one of the triplets after one of them. Ross gets paranoid when Emily and Susan spend time together in London.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: After Ross acts like a Crazy Jealous Guy in front of his friends, Phoebe says she's ruling out his name for the baby because of this and references Joey's pick.
Phoebe: Well, it just, you know, something like this would never happen to like the Hulk, you know.
  • But Not Too Gay: When Ross and Carol reunite with Emily and Susan at the airport: Ross and Emily kiss, Carol and Susan hug.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Ross convinces himself that something will happen between Emily and Susan while they're in London. Carol, Monica, Phoebe and Rachel all call him out on it. Phoebe notes that Carol leaving him is the most likely source of his issues. When Ross denies it Rachel points out he did the same thing when she made friends with Mark even though she wasn't interested in him, and Monica observes that he was never this paranoid back in high school even when all his girlfriends were cheating on him.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Chandler. YMMV on whether this is true or not, but Joey certainly thinks so and Chandler claims this name has held him back his entire life.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Rachel attempts to save face in front of Joshua's parents by claiming her negligee is just a prototype dress from Bloomingdale's. She's then invited to dinner at a restaurant.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Ross repeatedly badgers her with paranoid claims, Carol concedes the extremely remote possibility that he could end up being right. He then shouts that he didn't actually believe it until now and panics even further.
  • Malaproper: While discussing Ross' jealousy issues Phoebe calls him a "crazy, jealous...sycophant". When everyone looks confused she admits she doesn't know what "sycophant" means but the rest is accurate.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: Joshua's mother assumes that he used the money they left him for groceries to hire Rachel.
  • Ready for Lovemaking: Rachel changes into her negligee and waits in the living room for Joshua. Cue his parents arrivng home unexpectedly.
  • Underdressed for the Occasion: Rachel ends up wearing a skimpy nightdress for dinner with Joshua's parents.
  • Wardrobe Malfunction: We learn this was the cap-off to Rachel's unintended dinner with Joshua's parents when she's describing the situation to Monica and Phoebe.
Rachel: Then the waiter spilled water down my back, and my boob popped out.
    Phoebe: Oh, no!
Rachel: It's okay. I have nice boobs.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?:
    • "The Hulk", as proposed by Joey. Joey and Chandler treat each other's names as such, while Phoebe treats Ross's name as such. Chandler ends up agreeing with Joey - too much for Joey, in fact.
    • According to Alice, Frank is absolutely insistent on "Frank, Jr., Jr." for one of the babies. When Chandler points out that "Frank the Third" is how that should be said, a frustrated Alice makes it clear she's well-aware of that and just doesn't want to fight it anymore.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It turns out Joshua's afraid of farm birds and gets very uncomfortable when he sees the Chick and the Duck. Rachel kicking them out into the hallway doesn't help because he knows they're still out there.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: After Joey says his name is stupid, Chandler becomes depressed and looks into changing his name. When Chandler gets to the point of saying his name has held him back his entire life, Phoebe says that's ridiculous and opts to name the third baby after him under the condition that he keeps the name, too. After Phoebe leaves to tell Frank and Alice her decision, Chandler smugly laughs at Joey, meaning he was doing this the whole time.
