Recap / Friends S 10 E 1 The One After Joey And Rachel Kiss

Rachel and Joey are an item now, as are Ross and Charlie, but they think they should inform each other before fully pursuing these relationships. Monica, Phoebe and Chandler listen in on these proceedings through the hotel's thin walls. Back home, Chandler has to deal with Monica's new choice of hairstyle, while Phoebe has to deal with the girl Mike has been dating for three months since breaking up with her.

Tropes:

• Best Friend: Ross is so touched that Joey has given his approval for Ross to date Charlie that he considers promoting Joey to "best friend" over Chandler.
• Brick Joke: At the beginning, Chandler recognizes through a wall that Charlie is watching Miss Congeniality. At the end, he makes Monica watch it.
• The Bro Code: Ross is reluctant to continue making out with Charlie because he wants to smooth things over with Joey first. The gang have to push Joey into doing the same with Rachel.
• Cannot Spit It Out: Rachel and Joey agree they should tell Ross about their relationship, but can't really bring themselves to for various reasons. In the end, Ross finds out by walking in on them.
• Gag Haircut: Monica goes to the hairdresser to get rid of her Diana Ross hair and comes back with seashell cornrows. She loves her new hairstyle, but it's not much of an improvement from Chandler's point of view and is clearly played for laughs.
• Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Phoebe attempts to do this when Precious starts freaking out about Mike dumping her but it backfires.
  Phoebe: Damn it woman, pull yourself together! Have some pride, for the love of God!
  (Precious starts crying)
  Phoebe: Okay, not a fan of the tough love.
• Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Monica tries to use her new braids to seduce Chandler by humming "Bolero" in a nod to 10 (1979) but instead she hums Ride of the Valkyries
• Right Through the Wall: Chandler, Monica and Phoebe discover the hotel walls are so thin they can hear everything going on between Ross & Charlie and Rachel & Joey. After Chandler reminds Monica that she's listening to her brother she switches with Phoebe.
• Stealing from the Hotel: Much like when Ross and Chandler went to Vermont, Ross tries to take as much stuff from the Barbados hotel as he can get away with, even a Bible. When he comes back he discovers that the shampoo and lotion bottles spilled inside his cases, much to his distress and stopping Rachel from telling him about her and Joey.
• Think Unsexy Thoughts: Ross breaks off from making out with Charlie because he wants to talk to Joey first. He has to take a second and think about his grandmother before he can get up and walk out of the room without it being awkward.
• Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: The girl that Mike has been dating after breaking up with Phoebe is called Precious. Phoebe thinks that's a dog's name and makes jokes about it.
