Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 5 Mo Chinese Mo Problems

Go To

Jessica and Louis are thrilled when a second Chinese family moves into the neighborhood, until Jessica learns how they raised their son. Evan goes door-to-door collecting information for the census bureau, which Eddie and Emery take advantage of when they plan to sneak over to use a neighbor's pool.

  • A Degree in Useless: Jessica is absolutely aghast to learn that Horace Lee, the son of the new Chinese family, decided that becoming a doctor wasn't for him, and instead switched majors to graduate Harvard as an artist that drives a taxi for a living. She almost changes her mind when she hears that Bill Gates once offered to buy one of his works for a hefty sum, only to remain aghast when Horace refused due to "artistic integrity".
  • Asian and Nerdy: A subplot in the episode is the homeowners association deciding to repaint a "We Are The World" mural of children, which Jessica and the Lees take advantage of to promote racial inclusivity. When they unveil it during the climax, however, the Asian child is hugging a textbook, prompting Jessica to give a speech on how even seemingly-positive stereotypes can be hurtful (and in the process, repairing her friendship with the Lees, who have different values from her own). In The Tag, it's been repainted again by Horace Lee to remove all stereotyping.
  • Basement-Dweller: In addition to being dismayed at Horace giving up a pre-med scholarship to become an artist, Jessica doesn't approve of Horace still living with his parents.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Jessica starts bonding with Elaine Lee, she says they're in sync, just like that popular boy band...the Backstreet Boys.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: After learning that Evan's conducting surveys for the census bureau, Eddie and Emery convince their pool-owning neighbor that they're doing the same in order to find out what times the pool will be completely unguarded and they can sneak in for a dip instead of going to the disgusting public pool.
  • Blackmail: Enraged at Eddie and Emery damaging his reputation (and the people's trust in the census) to gain access to a neighbor's pool, Evan starts announcing their embarrassing secrets with a megaphone in order to get them to stop swimming in it.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: Jessica is upset that the homeowners association is approving low-rise jeans, as when all the woman stand up to cheer for repairing the "We Are The World" mural, she can see everyone's underwear and is clearly uncomfortable. She and Elaine get them to reverse the decision and return to regular pants after pulling their "racism trap", but after they have a falling-out, Elaine wears low-rise jeans to the mural unveiling.
  • Grade Skipper: According to Elaine Lee, Horace skipped two grades to attend Harvard at age 16...even though he ultimately switched majors to an art degree.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Jessica and Louis are making plans to properly introduce themselves to the new Chinese family, Jessica reminds Louis to be calm and presentable in order to avoid making a bad first impression. The moment Louis turns his back, Jessica runs towards the family and shrieks in joy as she eagerly embraces them.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite Elaine Lee being completely supportive of her son's decisions to become an artist and drive a taxi for a living, even she regrets to admit that he's taking harmonica lessons.
  • Racial Face Blindness: Jessica and Elaine take advantage of this trope to pull a "racism trap", having Elaine wear one of Jessica's dresses and have the head of the homeowner association mix them up before accusing her of racism and getting her to add racial inclusivity to the mural (and get people to stop wearing low-rise jeans) as reconciliation.
  • The Scrooge: The Lees tell the Huangs that the last time they saw another Chinese face was three years ago, as a passenger on a bus, but they weren't willing to pay the bus fare to properly meet him (and the passenger, despite also desiring to bond with someone from their own culture, wasn't willing to disembark the bus after already paying fare). Additionally, the Lees are properly introduced as they're smuggling take-out boxes out of an all-you-can-eat buffet.
  • Third Wheel: A non-romantic version, as Louis tries befriending the new Chinese father Julius, but soon starts to worry that Julius and Marvin are excluding him from activities. When he confronts them over it, it turns out Marvin was worried he would become a third wheel and had been overly eager to bond with Julius to avoid being forgotten.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: In The Tag, Jessica is hesitant to accept Horace's compliments after he's seen her book and states that they're both Asian "artists".
