Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 6 Sub Standard

Go To

Jessica is unimpressed with the "alternative" teaching methods of Eddie's substitute English teacher, even though Eddie is doing very well. Elsewhere, Louis and Honey try to join a fitness group to lose weight, and Emery's concerned when Evan offers to remove a splinter from his finger.

  • Lesser of Two Evils: Emery ultimately allows Evan to remove the splinter with tweezers when a fed-up Grandma states that she's tired of his bellyaching and demands to remove either it or the finger with a carving knife.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Honey's determination to lose weight is to regain a feeling of normality after having her baby, and after every class they try doesn't work out, Louis helps her accept that it'll never be the same as it was and she's in a new phase of her life...just in time to learn she's going to have a NEW new phase very soon.
  • Not What I Signed on For: Despite her many misgivings of Mr. Grant, she is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and actually spectate one of his classes due to Eddie's improved behavior...only to storm out in a huff less than a minute in, after Mr. Grant opens the class by shutting off the lights and announcing that they'll be using their imaginations instead of their textbooks today.
  • Overly Long Gag: One of the fitness groups Honey and Louis try joining is a group of stroller-pushing moms that sing a "Hello!" song for every member and their baby before actually exercising. By the time it gets to Louis, 15 minutes have passed and Honey is fed up enough to leave.
  • Shameful Source of Knowledge: Although it's not shameful to the person using the knowledge, Jessica is aghast that, after failing to focus on The Canterbury Tales, Eddie's replacement homework assignment from Mr. Grant appears to be about cereal instead of a topic actually pertaining to English. However, it turns out that cereal was just motivation for the food-loving Eddie to write a paper about the use and importance of casual pleasantries in modern language; specifically, how the British phrase "Cheerio" inspired the name of cereal brand "Cheerios".
  • Shout-Out: An anxiety-ridden Emery refuses treatment from Evan until he can at least play Operation without causing it to buzz.
  • Special Guest: Mr. Grant, the substitute teacher only appearing in this episode, is played by Ryan Hansen.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Honey's been having an unusual amount of difficulty getting back into shape after having Maria, only to learn at the end of the episode that it's because she's pregnant again.
