Recap / Frasier S 05 E 12 The Zoo Story

Go To

Frasier hires a new good-hearted yet ineffective agent in order to avoid going back to the black-hearted but effective Bebe, but soon goes through the downsides that come with an ethical agent while Niles tries to avoid firing another marriage counselor at the behest of Maris, but she cuts off their sex time to make him do so.

Tropes:

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: After deriding Frasier's new agent Ben for being too pure and honest, he shows up literally wearing a boy's scout uniform, as he'd just helped his son's troop and didn't have time to change outfits.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Maris fires every marriage counselor she and Niles see on account of them pointing out her role in their matrimony decline, and refuses to have sex with Niles unless he discharges a marriage counselor who simply asks her not to catalog shop while in session.
  • Extreme Libido: Much like in the episode Look Before You Leap, Niles can only go on for so long without having sex because otherwise, he is desperate for it.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: As Frasier learns the hard way, sometimes an unethical person can prevail and an ethical person, while well-meaning, can cause mistakes that do more harm for you than good.
  • I Can Live With That: Just as Frasier is about to re-hire Bebe, he learns that the bird that pecked him just died because someone fed it a jawbreaker. Bebe is suspiciously quiet, and avoids looking at Frasier.
Frasier: Bebe...is there a chance it wasn't you?
Bebe: Oh darling...there's always a chance.
Frasier: (Beat) I can live with that.
  • Implausible Deniability: At the end, when Frasier re-hires Bebe, he learns immediately afterwards that the "Frasier" crane bird had recently choked to death. When Frasier asks Bebe if there's a chance she wasn't responsible, all she can say is "There's always a chance", which Frasier hesitantly deems acceptable.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Martin hadn't let the Crane out of its pen, it would have been a pretty good PR stunt.
  • Publicity Stunt: After Frasier hires Ben as his new agent, the first plan he has is for a zoo to name an actual crane bird after Frasier. Then the bird gets loose and attacks Martin at the press meeting.
  • Principles Zealot: Frasier is determined to stick with his principles no matter what kind of trouble they get him into when hiring Ben as his new agent. Deconstructed in the end when, after Ben comes in wearing a scout uniform, Frasier finally has enough and decides to give up his principles for the sake of his career and re-hires Bebe as his agent.
