Recap / Frasier S 01 E 22 Author Author

Go To

Frasier and Niles attempt to join forces on a book, but wind up doing more fighting than writing.

Tropes:

  • Always Second Best: Niles is upset that Frasier was always the first at everything — first to become a psychiatrist, first to get married, first to have a child — while he just got sloppy seconds; and that even though Niles is the one who is successful professionally, "it's your big fat face they put on the side of busses!"
  • Infant Sibling Jealousy: The now-adult Frasier and Niles have a fight, at which point Niles has a flashback to Frasier trying to strangle him to death as an infant in his crib. Frasier himself apparently simultaneously has the same flashback, as he screams "You stole my mommy!"
  • Madness Shared by Two: Played for laughs. Frasier and Niles lock themselves in a hotel room to start a book they're supposed to write together before the deadline. It isn't long before they descend into jealous tantrums, wrestling around, and eventually a trip down memory lane as Frasier tackles Niles onto the bed:
Niles: My god, I'm having a flashback! You're climbing into my crib and jumping on me!
    Frasier: YOU STOLE MY MOMMY!
  • No Infantile Amnesia: As Frasier throttles him, Niles remembers a suppressed memory.
Niles: My God, I'm having a flashback! You're climbing in my crib and jumping on me!
    Frasier: YOU STOLE MY MOMMY!
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Upon being roped into writing a book with Niles, Frasier's first instinct is to bail out, only for Niles to persuade him otherwise.
  • Special Guest: Mako as Sam Tanaka the book publisher.
  • Subverted Rhyme Every Occasion: Frasier and Niles recall the song revue they did at college.
Some boys run off to college, but we think they're all wussies, cause they get all the knowledge, and we get all the umpta-da-da-da umpta-da-da...
  • Suddenly Shouting: Niles, thusly:
Niles: It's not a tantrum, and I'm not jealous. I'm FED UP!
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: When Niles gets Frasier in a headlock, Frasier reminds Niles they're psychiatrists, not pugilists to get him to let go.
Frasier: [putting Niles into a headlock of his own] I can't believe you fell for that!
