Recap / Frasier S 01 E 06 The Crucible

Go To

Frasier throws a cocktail party to exhibit a new painting he has bought, but is humiliated when the artist shows up and declares it a forgery.

Examples:

  • Artistic Licence – Law: In spite of the examples listen below, the whole situation would not go that way if this were a real occurrence. Authorities are required to look into potential forgery laws and that fact that Martha Paxton herself was a keen witness to seeing someone forge her name onto a painting, would give Frasier some legal leverage.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Hayson gets away with selling Frasier the fake Paxton, partly because of his gallery's "all sales final" policy, and partly because any legal means of retribution would be more trouble than it's worth.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Frasier is stuck with the fake Paxton, but he and Niles get revenge by tossing a brick through the gallery window.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Niles has no problem with throwing a brick through the gallery window, but still insists on leaving money to cover the repair bills. As he puts it, "we may be barbarians, but we pay for our pillaging!"
  • Gilligan Cut: After Frasier insists that he won't leave the gallery until the owner gives him his money back, it cuts to a title card reading "After he left..."
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Frasier worries Martin will embarrass him in front of his guests during the party. While Martin comes close when he shows one of the guests photos from a gruesome crime scene, Frasier accidentally does one better after Martha Paxton reveals that his new painting is a fake.
  • Not So Above It All: After Frasier tells Niles about the embarrassing nicknames from back in high school - including one that Coach Medwick came up with himself - Niles changes his mind about getting revenge, and throws the brick through the window himself.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Frasier's sole caller for the episode, Gary, has had an argument with his wife over whether to take an expensive trip to Italynote  or get a new sump-pump for the basement. Unsurprisingly, Frasier sides with Gary's wife, and is disdainful when Gary sticks with getting the sump-pump - and then, after he ends the call, asks Roz what a sump-pump is.
  • The Tag: Frasier studies his fake Paxton, which now hangs in a place of (dis)honor over his toilet.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Martha Paxton doesn't appear again after the party, and when Frasier is discussing legal options for dealing with the gallery, the possibility of getting her involved doesn't come up, even though you'd think she'd be interested in stopping people from selling forgeries under her name.
