Recap / Everybody Hates Chris S 3 E 8 Everybody Hates Minimum Wage

Go To

  • Always Someone Better: James always takes up Chris' position at the his last place of employment, and he's always paid a full wage with no taxes.
  • Anime Hair: The hairstyles Rochelle has to choose from for her modeling career are completely ridiculous. A notable one is "The Blacksmacker", of which the back of her hair is shaped into a huge hand that can actually slap someone silly if she turns quickly enough.
  • The Big Rotten Apple: If you didn't think Bed-Stuy was extremely dangerous before, this episode removes any doubt. All of Chris' Chinese food deliveries involve him risking his life in the gritty streets of the ghetto. One of them has him at gunpoint as a scorned woman recklessly handles a huge revolver arguing with her partner.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Greg falls for a girl at school but cannot for the life of him approach her, let alone talk to her.
  • Celebrity Resemblance: Parodied. The Chinese workers insist that Chris resembles Lionel Richie. Needless to say, the only thing they have in common physically is being black.
Chris, after quitting in a huff: And I don't look like Lionel Richie!
    Narrator!Chris: Yes I do!
  • Funny Background Event: When Chris delivers to the scorned woman with a huge revolver, he's dodging the gun as she uses it as a pointer, then books it the hell out of there.
  • Hikikomori: One of Chris' deliveries is a deeply paranoid man who refuses to open his door, communicating through the peephole. Chris has to shove every last container through the slot to get the man's food to him.
    Man: Who is it?!
    Chris: Hoo's!
    Man: Who's what?!
    Chris: Hoo's delivery!
    Man: Who- I DUNNO!
    Chris: MAN, IT'S CHINESE FOOD!
    Man: OH! Thank you..
  • Misfortune Cookie: Wok gives Chris a fortune cookie when he asks what he should do about his strained friendship with Greg. The message inside? "Get back to work."
  • Musical Gag: "Mandy" by Barry Manilow plays as Greg ogles over Mandy, a girl at school he's head over heels for.
  • Running Gag: The Chinese workers calling Chris "Lionel Richie", insisting that he looks like him.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Doc explains that he pays Chris below minimum wage because if he did, he and Chris would get taxed to hell and back and that'd probably force him out of business. Never mind the fact that James was paid minimum wage, but let's just chalk that up to this show's signature Kafka Comedy flavor of Rule of Funny.
