• An Aesop: If the title didn't clue you in, yes, gambling isn't very good. Every character who gambles in this episode has it blow up in their face.
• Captain Obvious:

  Rochelle: You see, you got people thinkin' they gonna win, when you know they gonna lose, if you let them lose, they probably coulda won, that's why I hate gambling, 'cause you can't win for losin'!

• Downer Ending: "Chrissy the Black", aka Chris, gets found out and Rochelle forces him to tell Doc (extending to everyone involved) to pull their bets. As it turns out, Chris was right again about his bet, so everyone lost/didn't gain money from Phoenix's win.
• Hypocrite: Even before this episode, Julius was known to gamble despite his claims to the contrary, but here, he bets his money based on tips from "Chrissy the Black".
• Improbable Weapon User: Rochelle uses a kitchen spoon to threaten her family of gamblers once she has them at her mercy.
• The Mafia: Shecky the Bookie and Paulie the Bookie are two mafiosos who want Doc's hot streak to come to an end.
• Mundane Made Awesome: Drew and Tonya's checkers match is narrated by famous sportscaster Jim Lampley.
• Red Baron: Chris is dubbed "Chrissy the Black" by Doc. Narrator!Chris claims that he called him that even before he started picking games.
• Shotgun Wedding: Greg's mother lost a bet and had to marry his father.
• Special Guest: Jim Lampley As Himself, narrating Drew and Tonya's checkers game.
• Would Hurt a Child: Shecky very heavily implies that he would harm Chris if he continues to call winning plays for Doc.
• Yank the Dog's Chain: Chris' bet is right and Phoenix wins the game. However, Rochelle forced him to reveal his identity to Doc, who told everyone to pull their bets over to the Lakers. This means that everyone who was counting on "Chrissy the Black", including Julius and Vanessa, didn't get any money.
