Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 8 Captain Mateo

Go To

Mateo and Gabe's friendship is put to the test after Mateo is put in charge of the Royal Guard. But as tough a pill to swallow as their conflict is, it'll be nothing compared to what happens to Esteban. But will his newfound power be for light or darkness?

  • Big "NO!": Ash lets one out when she realizes she was teleported right before she could gain powers from the Well of Crystals.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Mateo agrees with Doña Paloma that magic will be needed to fight Ash (and Esteban), and Gabe believes that reinforcements will always be necessary. What the two have to understand is that it wouldn't be effective to have one of these things without the other.
  • Character Development: As Elena previously insisted on going on searches for Shuriki back in Season 2, she now entrusts that task to Mateo and Gabe by the end of this episode.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Esteban trips over a giant branch that he uses as a trekking pole while he and Ash go to Takaína. It turns into a magical staff after he falls into the Well of Crystals.
    • When Elena tells Gabe not to leave the room so that she can talk to him, she accidentally seals the door with a wall of impenetrable magical crystals created by her scepter's magic. She uses this new power to seal the entrance to Takaína at the end.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Ash begs for her master's forgiveness after she stole his tamborita, and he tells her that he's So Proud of You because this is what villains do, although he's annoyed when he learns that she got his tamborita destroyed again.
  • Dramatic Irony: We learn that Elena had second thoughts about making exile Esteban's punishment, but his alliance with Ash assures her that she made the right choice.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Esteban reaches for Ash's fallen tamborita in a panic. Soon after, he falls into the Well of Crystals and becomes a sorcerer.
  • HA HA HA—No: Gabe laughs when Dona Paloma proposes making Mateo the captain of the guard instead. Mateo takes it as insulting his competence, so he sides with Paloma out of spite.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Flo excitedly tells Elena that even though they got Victor and Carla back, they still need to go after Ash and her awful, terrible, traitorous, scum of a cousin, Esteban. Of course, this raises Elena's ire, causing everyone and everything near by to chaotically float around. After Elena calms down, Flo says that she wants to do it again.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Doña Paloma asks why Gabe would be in charge of the royal guard if if they've proven to be useless if not detrimental in fighting against magic users in the past, so an experienced magic user like Mateo should be in charge instead. While what Doña pointed out of needing magic to fight magic was blatantly obvious, the real lesson is that Mateo should help Gabe and the royal guard, not lead it. Doña only reluctantly accepts the compromise, but expects Gabe to succeed.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally professional Gabe, who honors all mandates made by the Grand Council, storms out in anger for a very outlandish decision to make Mateo leader.
  • Power Incontinence:
    • Elena is easily angered by anything associated with Esteban, which once again causes anyone and anything near her to be chaotically levitated in the air.
    • Esteban has trouble getting his new teleportation magic to work, which nearly gets him and Ash caught when they keep teleporting near Elena and co.
  • Support Party Member : Mateo has no military experience, so he's completely clueless as to how to lead the guard. At best, Mateo is more useful as this with his magic.
  • Teleportation: Esteban gains the power to magically teleport elsewhere by tapping his staff on the ground.
  • Wham Episode: Esteban now has magic powers after falling into the Well of Crystals, and Elena and co. seal the entrance to Takaína to prevent any more people from gaining powers there.
