Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 7 Flower Of Light

Go To

When two mischievous spirits try to ruin Día de los Muertos, Elena teams up with her childhood friend Felicia to travel to the spirit world and save the holiday.

  • An Aesop: While it is natural to mourn the loss of a loved one, you shouldn't become so wrapped up in your grief that it begins to affect those around you or makes you give up something you truly enjoy. Instead, you should try to find the strength to move on and live your life to the fullest and happiest, just as your loved one would want you to.
  • Breather Episode: After the previous episode being a Wham Episode regarding the past, Elena now gets to have a nostalgic time with her old childhood friend and the spirits of her parents.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Guillermo spent his whole life focusing on his music and died lonely.
    • Felicia outlived her husband Ricardo and gave up dancing as a result of his loss.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Considering this aired after "The Magic Within", which had Elena find out about Esteban's betrayal leading to her parents' deaths, the episode is about the importance of finding the strength to move on from grief and focusing on your happiness in the future. It ultimately becomes a huge part of Elena's arc for the rest of the season.
  • I Thought You Were Dead: When Elena sees a picture of Felicia and Ricardo on what she thought was an altar, she believed for a second that Felicia died.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: As a result of Elena having spent several decades in the Amulet, many people from before that time have obviously aged since then (and have moved on since Elena's supposed death). In particular, her childhood friend Felicia is now in her late 50s to early 60s while Elena is around 19 or 20.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Felicia when she realizes she just helped Sanza shut the portal between the Spirit World and the world of the living.
