Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 13 King Skylar

Go To

When Skylar's father falls ill, Skylar becomes king for a day and must learn what it takes to be in charge.

  • An Aesop: Being a good leader is making the right decisions, not the most popular decisions.
  • As You Know: For anyone that hasn't seen "Father-In-Chief", Elena and Skylar catch Luna up on Grotto Mettamo.
  • Broken Glass Penalty: Subverted. Skylar is persuaded by Nico to let him and his friends play ball in the palace, but nothing gets broken.
  • Call-Back:
    • Grotto Mettamo from "Father-In-Chief" is hydrated by Agua Dulce Pond, hence the similar powers.
  • Caught in a Snare: The jaquins had to catch the butterfrog that transformed them in a trap in order to get him to change them back, since he could not be reasoned with due to his attitude. King Verago was going to threaten him, but Skylar decides to go gentle on him and makes him a deal that the whole pond can be his if he changes them back.
  • Character Development: Skylar again, naturally. While he had already been shown to have Hidden Depths, as well as the ability to take responsibility and to stand up to his father in order to do what was right, it's in this episode where he specifically is forced to overcome his insecurity so as to prove he can be a good king. Lampshaded by Luna's less-than-helpful commentary during "Wings Up", referencing how he used to be a slacker and prone to errors but now has the ability to "turn it all around".
  • Chekhov's Gun: Troyo tries to turn himself back into a coyote while lining up with everyone else to be turned back into a jaquin. Fortunately, Elena reacts quickly enough by telling the butterfrog to shout out "snurtle", since Troyo complained that he's become as slow as a snurtle in his butterfrog form.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The cranky butterfrog turns the jaquins into other creatures just for blocking his sun. Sure enough, he gets caught for doing that.
  • Mighty Roar: When no one will listen to his ideas for how to catch the butterfrog and fix all the jaquins, and his own father mocks him, Skylar responds with one of these. Everyone shuts up and Verago is shamed into apologizing.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Right when Troyo tries to jump into pond and tells the butterfrog to turn him back into a coyote. Elena reacts quick enough to get him to say "snurtle" instead.
    • Troyo himself has one when the butterfrog says "snurtle" right as he jumps into the pond.
    • Also, everyone's reaction to Skylar's Mighty Roar.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Skylar, when he finally puts his paw down and asserts himself to get everyone to listen and agree to his plan.
    Skylar, softly: The king...has spoken.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: The whole point of Elena's pick-me-up song "Wings Up" to Skylar, by way of Mistakes Are Not the End of the World.
