Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S3 E2 "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 2"

Go To

After escaping Dagur, the riders head home and try to figure out what the Dragon Eye is. But after a rather dangerous try at opening it, Gothi realizes a keyhole-like indention looks a lot like a bite she received from a dragon when she was younger. The riders, with Gothi in tow, try to find the dragon that once attacked the old woman in hopes that a tooth will be the key to unlocking the secrets of the Dragon Eye.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Physics: Being buried in snow would not be enough to cover a human's body heat. If anything, given how snow can be used as an insulator, it would make a person's body heat even more obvious.
  • Back-Alley Doctor: Gobber, who sets a man's leg on fire with disinfectant, decides to cut a man's foot off when it has a thorn stuck in it, and when trying to cure a stomach flu, instead creates a hair growth formula.
  • Bad Boss: Dagur makes two of his paltry crew jump overboard when Hiccup succeeds in stealing back the Dragon Eye.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Inverted; Savage is clean-shaven.
  • Bizarre Alien Senses: The Snow Wraith's eye sight is based off heat much like a Predator in hunting mode.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Gothi as a teenager and two others were attacked by a Snow Wraith, she was the only survivor. For a very good reason, she has no desire to go back to that peak.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Hiccup seeks to know Gothi's story about the bite marks on her arm to learn how to open the Dragon Eye.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The Snow Wraith drags Gothi's friends off-screen in the middle of a snow drift.
  • Idiot Ball: Dagur not considering that Hiccup and Toothless would be swift and stealthy enough to rescue his friends and fly to do a Stealth Hi/Bye and steal the Dragon Eye.
  • It's the Journey That Counts: Getting the tooth didn't really help Hiccup discover the secrets of the Dragon Eye, in fact it almost seems like the whole thing was a waste of time until Toothless making his bed activates the eye.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Tuff is rather unconcerned that he was just stabbed by a dart flying from the dragon eye.
  • Never Mess with Granny:
    • Gobber fears Gothi's whacks when he misinterprets her drawings.
    • The Snow Wraith learns this the hard way when Gothi attacks it and whacks it with her stick.
  • Not Now, Kiddo:
    • Dagur does this when Savage sees Hiccup approaching and tries to warn the chief. When Hiccup predictably steals the Dragon Eye, Dagur pulls Never My Fault and blames Savage.
    • Hiccup also does it when he'd rather stay in a snowstorm to get a Wraith tooth, and Gothi tries to show him that one got stuck in her stick.
  • Scars Are Forever: Gothi has a scar on her arm from when the Snow Wraith bit her.
  • Take the Third Option: Hiccup saves his friends then using Toothless' amazing speed goes and steals the Dragon Eye back.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Gothi loves Gobber's Yak noodle soup.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: No-one blinks an eye at the gas in the Dragon Eye giving Tuffnut a seizure, though they drag him to Gothi's to get healed.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Snotlout says this almost word-for-word when the eels come back for the trapped dragon riders as the ship is sinking.
