While clearing a field for sowing crops, Hookfang and Stormfly start to get into arguments, their riders start to follow suit. Hiccup has to make Astrid and Snotlout work together, much to his consternation.
Tropes
- Apple of Discord: Dragon Root is this to most dragons, except Gronkles. Hiccup quickly figures out that the root was causing Hookfang and Stormfly to disagree.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Snotlout assumes that he and Astrid have developed this. She couldn't disagree more.
- The Chains of Commanding: Because Hiccup is Astrid and Snotlout's leader, he has to mediate between them when they start to disagree.
- Chekhov's Skill: Each new ability that Astrid and Snotlout discover in Hookfang and Stormfly helps them fight a rogue Barf and Belch in the climax.
- Convection, Schmonvection: In a somewhat ridiculous display of firepower, even by this show's standards, Stormfly melts a sea stack into lava with her fire breath.
- Foreshadowing: While Hiccup is trying to mediate between Astrid and Snotlout, Toothless sniffs the ground, then his pupils shrink and he also goes berserk, implying that something other than a simple disagreement is going on.
- No-Sell: Dragon Root has no effect on Gronkles; this allows Fishlegs and Meatlug to pick up the root and drop it in the ocean.
- Pet the Dog: After riding her for a day, Snotlout brings chicken for Stormfly. Astrid in turn brings cod for Hookfang.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Stoick, while mentoring Hiccup. He waits until Hiccup comes to him with the problem of Astrid and Snotlout disagreeing.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Both Astrid and Snotlout refuse to get together and work, and they tell Hiccup as such. Subverted in that he makes them work together as part of Option Three.
- Strange Minds Think Alike: Astrid and Snotlout know about the three Viking options for settling conflicts.
- Take a Third Option: Averted since there is a third option as opposed to making two Vikings fight out their aggression: trick them to work together.
- Undying Loyalty: At the climax, Stormfly and Hookfang are put in a stalemate because their respective riders are on the other, and despite the Dragon Root, they wouldn't hurt them.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Tuffnut claims that Mildew's cabbages are delicious. His stomach doesn't agree with him.
