Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 2 E 14 Frozen

Go To

After rescuing Trader Johann from a blizzard, Hiccup and Toothless return from a mission to find Berk mysteriously empty. They discover that the village has been overrun by Speed Stingers, non-flying dragons that move at blindingly fast speeds and can paralyze their victims with their tails. The Speed Stingers have trekked across the frozen sea to Berk and driven everyone out of town. Now, Hiccup must find a way to drive the Speed Stinger horde away from Berk before their next raid.

Tropes

  • And I Must Scream: What happens to the Speed Stingers' victims if they get paralyzed. Stoick tries to speak but Gobber has to translate for him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When the teens are surrounded and outnumbered by the Speed Stinger pack, Stoick and Thornado show up to ward them off.
  • Cabin Fever: When the episode begins, the riders have been trapped inside due to a week long snowstorm. Fishlegs has taken to talking to Meatlug's toes, Barf and Belch are chasing their tails, and Tuffnut thinks he has an invisible tail.
  • Cat Scare: Fishlegs jumps on Hiccup in a moment of fright. Hiccup gets knocked out since Fishlegs is much larger than he is.
  • Continuity Nod: Johann at the end of the episode gives Hiccup a new bottle of squid ink . . . and wants to tell Hiccup just how he obtained it.
  • Disability Immunity: With Hiccup, the Speed Stingers try to attack him by the leg, only to get his prosthetic. They do manage to tear Toothless's tail-fin, however.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Hiccup and Johann miss seeing a paralyzed Meatlug on their way into Berk.
Hiccup/Johann: How did we miss that?
  • Living Statue: Not literally, but the Speed Stinger's paralysis locks up their victim's muscles, making them resemble this trope.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The Stingers took out Berk, a tribe of Vikings and dragons, out in one night.
  • The Paralyzer: A Speed Stinger's sting injects victims with an agent that paralyzes humans and dragons in seconds.
  • People Puppets: While paralyzed, Snotlout has Gustav act as his arms and legs.
  • Running Gag: Trader Johann's long-winded stories.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At the end of the episode, Hiccup leaves Trader Johann hanging rather than have to listen to another long winded story.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: Let's just say the twins and Gustav have their fun with a paralyzed Snotlout.
Snotlout: Gustav, make me punch you!
(Gustav smacks Snotlout with his own hand)
  • Super-Speed: They aren't called Speed Stingers for nothing.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Hiccup asks Snotlout if he did check the cave he was meant to:
Snotlout: Of course I did! Do you think I fell off my dragon and spent hours trying to get out of the sand? (laughs awkwardly) I didn't.
Gustav: He fell off his dragon and we spent hours trying to get him out of the sand.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: Stoick orders an evacuation of Berk during the first Speed Stinger attack, as the snowstorm made it easy for the Vikings to be picked off.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Nobody dies, but those paralyzed by the Speed Stingers lose all the color on their skin.
  • Zerg Rush: Speed Stingers travel in packs and move blindingly fast, giving them major advantages against opponents who aren't ready for them.
