Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 1 E 6 Alvin And The Outcasts

Go To

With the dragons exiled from Berk and Mildew has destroyed the evidence of the Frame-Up, the island finds itself defenseless when Alvin the Treacherous and the Outcasts come to claim the Dragon Conqueror.

Tropes for this episode:

  • Anchors Away: Alvin temporarily swings an anchor in his fight against Stoick.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Alvin snarks at Snotlout to check his trousers after Snotlout chickens out of attacking him.
  • Call-Back: Due to the armory getting destroyed in the previous episode, Gobber has to work overtime. He doesn't get a chance to replenish the weapons before the Outcasts hit the shore.
  • Cassandra Truth: Alvin initially laughs when Hiccup reveals himself as the Dragon Conqueror.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • When the Vikings stockpile their weapons, they come up with two frying pans, a rolling pin, and a kitchen knife.
Stoick: And what are we going to do when we find Alvin? Bake him a cake?!
Gobber: Pie could be nice. Who doesn't like pie?
    • Also, when Alvin tells the hostages on the beach that he earned his title— Alvin the Treacherous— for a reason, the twins snicker about how he earned the name Alvin.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: More like Cover Blowing Skill, but Hiccup invokes this on Dragon Island so that Alvin doesn't hurt anyone on Berk, showing that he has tamed Toothless, a Night Fury.
  • Damsel in Distress: Astrid falls victim to this, twice; first is when Alvin grabs her hair forcibly while interrogating her, and second is when he takes her as a hostage when a catapult knocks her off Stormfly. The second time she takes the opportunity to hit him in the gut with an oar and grab onto Toothless.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Gobber may not be the sharpest viking there is, but he’s not too far off base when he reprimands Stoick for thoughtlessly sending the dragons away when the island was low on weapons to protect it from the Outcasts, despite the seemingly solid evidence that the dragons destroyed the armory.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Mildew gloats to Astrid right before he's about to sell out Hiccup. Subverted in that Astrid and the other teens hate Mildew, and she quickly knocks him out after his Evil Gloating.
  • Face Palm: Tuffnut does it when Snotlout hands his mace to Alvin instead of whacking him with it.
  • Genius Bruiser: Alvin not only exchanges blows with Stoick easily, but he comes up with a clever plan involving I Have Your Wife to find out who the Dragon Conqueror is. And it works; although he loses his ship and several men, he knows that the Dragon Conqueror is Hiccup.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: The twins normally cause nothing but trouble for Hiccup, but when he's taken by Alvin they want permission to kick the Outcast chief's butt.
  • I Have Your Wife: This seems to be Alvin's mode of obtaining what he wants; he goes to the beach, taking the children and elderly hostage, in hopes of exchanging them for the Dragon Conqueror.
  • Improvised Weapon: With their armory destroyed, Stoick and the other Vikings defending Berk have to rely on kitchen equipment and freshly made bolas. As it turns out, however, the element of surprise helps the Berkians turn the tables on invading Outcasts in a Curb-Stomp Battle. They also steal what weapons they can from the Outcasts.
  • Memetic Badass: In-universe, the Outcasts referred to Hiccup as the "Dragon Conqueror" and believed him to be 10-feet tall with the strength of a dozen men.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Bucket retrieving a toy lamb for a little girl accidentally reveals where the elderly and children are hiding on Berk.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Alvin, given that the minute Hiccup saddles up Toothless, he wastes no time in trying to shoot rider and dragon down.
  • Not Now, Kid: When Mildew tries to make Hiccup the scapegoat in Alvin’s attack, Stoick ignores him.
  • Papa Wolf: Stoick is this in spades. It's not a good idea to take his only son.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Stoick, again. He believes Hiccup when the latter explains how he witnessed Mildew destroying the fake dragon feet and claws, but tells him that they need actual proof to accuse a man of high treason. Later on, when the Outcasts invade, he gives Hiccup permission to fetch the dragons as a means of defense. Hiccup just doesn't have the chance to get the dragons because the Outcasts have surrounded the island. Stoick then pardons the dragons after they help strand the Outcasts on Dragon Island.
  • Shout-Out: Alvin's and Hiccup's first meeting mirrors the first meeting between Prince Zuko and Avatar Aang in the Avatar: The Last Airbender episode "The Avatar Returns" — the villain (who sees the hero as the key to solving his problems resulting from his banishment) threatens a village looking for the hero, the hero reveals himself, the villain (who was prepared to see someone incredibly strong and powerful) is shocked to see how young and small he is, the hero promises to go with him if he leaves the village alone, and the villain agrees and sails away with the hero.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Initially Alvin's decision to take Hiccup to Dragon Island, to see his abilities. If Hiccup is the Dragon Conqueror, he's surrounded by armed Outcasts and will be forced at arrow point to show off his abilities. If he isn't, then Alvin gets the pleasure of seeing Hiccup eaten by a dragon.
