Recap / Disenchantment - S3 E8: "Hey, Pig Spender"

Go To

After trying to help Prince Merkimer lift the curse that turned him into a pig, Bean asks his parents for resources to thwart the threat from Steamland.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Merkimer gets a lot of focus and development.
  • Art Shift: The scenery around Bentwood goes from the show's usually look to something out of Sleeping Beauty.
  • Badass Longcoat: Bean dons an anarchronistic one for her investigation. It gets torched when she goes into the burning tower.
  • Brick Joke: On arrival at Bentwood, Bean tries asking for flails, but forgets the name, merely calling them "chainy-ball things". At the end of the episode, Merkimer Pig attacks her with a flail and she finally remembers the name.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Turns out the Beastman of Bentwood from the Steamland freak show is the Merkimer Pig.
  • The Coup: Merkimer!Pig stages one, helped by the actual Merkimer. He has even his own parents imprisoned.
  • Covered in Mud: The monster seen early in the episode eventually turns out to be Merkimer's human body, now inhabited by the pig that he switched places with and covered in mud and sticks.
  • Court Mage: In contrast with Sorcerio, the mage in Merkimer's home kingdom is completely competent, flat-out stating that anyone who isn't Sorcerio can perform proper spells.
  • Disney Villain Death: The Pig Merkimer is knocked off a castle wall by Bean, and falls to his death.
  • Drowning Pit: Interesting variant as Merkimer!Pig plans to kill Bean, Luci and Elfo via burying alive by filling the room they are in up with golden coins. It serves as a form of ironic punishment since they came to Bentwood to ask for money.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Jasper, the child Zog had with Ursula, makes a cameo in the forest during the scene where the mob hunts the monster.
  • Foreshadowing: Luci ironically reference his future fate (And ironically Bean's as well).
Luci: Till death to us part beanie-baby.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: We learn this episode that, rather than a being transformed into a pig, this is what actually happened to Merkimer; he switched bodies with a pig.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • During the scene with the angry mob, you can see a bear cub looking at them from the brush. This bear's face looks somewhat like Zog.
    • During the introduction to Bentwood, a man in a barrel can be seen selling Me Flavored Champagne, which seems to be going better than Dreamland's Me Flavored Water guy.
    • A pan between the floorboards of Bentwood Castle shows an entire gallery of Guisbert paintings. Likewise, it shows the room Pigimer tries to kill the trio in a few minutes early, complete with the giant pile of money above it.
  • Hated by All: No-one in Bentwood actually likes Merkimer, and were glad Bean turned him into a pig since it meant they didn't have to deal with him any more.
  • Heroic Fire Rescue: Bean rescues the monster from the tower after the peasants set it on fire.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Played with, when Bean and co. insult Merkimer, who's right behind them. He apologizes for being nearby while they were bad-mouthing him, but Bean admits she knew he was there anyway.
  • Internal Reveal: Elfo learns that Luci and the recruits saw him participate in the Trøg's moon ritual last night, and is quite embarrassed about it.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: A Bentwood guard insults the pig, thinking he can't hear him.
  • Jerkass: Sam the peasant, who spends several minutes irritating Bean by being sarcastic and difficult just because.
  • Kick the Dog: Almost literally. Merkimer Pig kicks Pig Merkimer when he tries saving Bean, Elfo and Luci.
Bean: What, you're kicking pigs now?
  • Schmuck Bait: When the room they're in is filled with gold, Luci 'swims' over to Elfo and tells him not to open his mouth. Elfo contrarily tries to yell at him, and gets a mouth full of gold. As Luci chortles about this, the exact same thing happens to him.
  • Shining City: While not as advanced as Steamland, Bentwood is depicted far richer and cleaner than Dreamland, while being every bit as unpleasant underneath.
  • Snap Back: Merkimer quickly reverts back to his old, boorish personality on getting back to Bentwood.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: The angry mob that chases after the monster early in the episode naturally has these.
  • Uplifted Animal: Zigzagged. Merkimer!Pig learn to speak while watching the other behave and act, but he does so in the body of Merkimer's former HUMAN body. It turns out that he learned other less appetizing human traits as well...
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: King Lorenzo and Queen Bunny are locked up in Pig Merkimer's coup, and it's unclear if they're let out, given the guards openly hate them.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Merkimer loses the chance to get his old body back, in addition to finding out everyone in his home kingdom hated him all along.
  • You Can Talk?: Bean and friends are quite surprised to find out that Merkimer!Pig can talk.
