Everyone is really excited when Sister Michael announces the school trip to Paris.

Tropes

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Michelle taking the bulletin board from Fionnula's restaurant in order to have first call on all the jobs for their Paris trip.
Erin: Can I ask why you stole the notice board?
Michelle: So we get first dibs on all the jobs.
James: Wouldn't it have been easier to just remove the notices? They're only Blu Tacked on.
Michelle: [after realising that he was right] …fuck off, dickweed!
Erin: Christ, what possessed you Michelle?
Michelle: Yeah… The more I talk about it and the more I sober up, the less sure I am, really.
    Clare: You were drunk?
  • Big Eater: Orla orders a huge amount of food just for herself at the chip shop, and the rest of the family orders seven bags of chips to share, ignoring Gerry who points out that this is excessive.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Colm doesn't quite understand why two armed gunmen wanted his van.
Colm: By Jesus, they were absolutely desperate to borrow thon van.
Mary: They didn't "borrow" your van, Colm. They stole your van, used it to move arms across the border, and then they blew it up.
  • The Dreaded: The main cast regards Fionnula with fearful reverence. No one wants to make her angry with them, especially if it means getting banned from the chip shop.
Clare: And you stole from Fionnula, of all people. Fionnula! I once saw her punch a Rottweiler, Michelle!
  • Epic Fail: As punishment for Michelle stealing the bulletin board from Finnoula's chip shop, all of them have to clean the shop. They end up making it even worse than before, and then almost burn down Finnoula's apartment.
  • Everyone Looks Sexier if French: Michelle's main motivation for wanting to go on the Paris trip.
Michelle: I will buck a French lad, so help me God!
  • Faux Horrific: This is everyone's reaction at the prospect of being banned from the chip shop, and Mary is especially horrified at the idea that she might have to cook on a Friday evening. Even Fionnula doesn't think she deserves this and suggests they order pizza instead.
  • Hard-Work Montage: Comes at the end when the girls are tasked with cleaning Fionnula's store as punishment for stealing the notice board. Subverted when it turns out they've actually just made it worse, with Clare accidentally spilling trash all over the place, James "cleaning" the window and floors (which becomes sticky) with mayonnaise instead of windolene, and Michelle just plain giving up and going upstairs to drink instead.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Mary refuses to believe the girls' explanation for the fire (that Michelle tripped while holding a candle), but gives the exact same excuse when Fionnula returns unexpectedly.
    • Michelle gets several bottles of alcohol out of Fionnula's cupboard and prepares flaming Sambucas, but thinks Fionnula's the one who drinks too much.
Michelle: I think she might have a bit of a problem.
Erin: You think Fionnula might have a bit of a problem?!
  • Incendiary Exponent: Michelle calls an impromptu break from cleaning Fionnula's shop with a tray of flaming Sambucas, which she promptly drops. Only James' quick action with an extinguisher prevents a House Fire.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": From Erin when Michelle's tray of flaming sambuca shots starts to teeter on her hand.
  • Serious Business: The girls act like James' dislike for the chip shop's food is unwarranted slander on their culture.
  • [Verb] This!: Michelle's response to being assigned the simplest task.
Michelle: And you should just about be able to handle this! [Flipping the Bird]

Dramatic pause

Sister Michael reads the words "dramatic pause" out loud, and then checks that Mr. Macaulay actually wanted her to say that.

How well does it match the trope?
