Go To

The fifth episode of the second season of Dennis the Menace (1986), and the seventieth episode of the series overall.

Tunnel Vision

Mr. Wilson is anticipating winning top prize for his vegetable garden contest until Dennis and Joey enter and walk through his tomato crops. He pleads with them not to do so anymore. Afterward, the boys, along with Ruff, Gina, and PeeBee decide to build a tunnel under the garden so they don't have to walk through the crops again. However, they dig in all the wrong directions, and along the way, take some of Mr. Wilson's carrots as a snack. But at the time, the judges are there and disqualify him for not having the vegetables. Eventually, the kids use their machine to dig a tunnel to Mr. Wilson's basement. Realizing they were responsible for his losing the contest, he throws them out and gets so steamed, his house sinks from the numerous tunnels the kids made.

Super Duper Dennis

Dennis eagerly awaits for a Super Duper Man costume he ordered through the mail, but it turns out to be an experimental jet suit the costume company sent by mistake. When he tries it out, he's able to fly all around town, then perform various heroics in the process. He then overhears a couple of villains' plans to sabotage his father's company's experimental jet, then zooms to rescue to prevent it from crashing. He's then able to capture the villains and take them to jail before returning home, where his mother gives him the costume he actually ordered. Mr. Wilson, who saw Dennis flying before, and thinks he's become crazy, is relieved when he sees him falling into a pile of mud in the regular costume.

Ice Show Show-Off

Dennis goes to the ice show with Mr. Wilson, who's not able to get in because the boy had both tickets when he entered. He's able to sneak in, but winds up on the rink and unwittingly becomes part of the show to Dennis, Gina, and Jay's amusement. George catches a cold the following day and the doctor recommends he get some ice for his fever, so the kids oblige by taking him back to the ice show, where's there's plenty to keep him cool.

"Super Duper Dennis" provides examples of:

  • Baby Carriage: Dennis sees a runaway baby carriage heading towards a busy street. He catches it just in time, saving the baby inside it.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Mr. Wilson tells his wife that he saw Dennis flying, she doesn't believe him, and tells him he's been in the sun too long.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: Or Super Duper Man, in this case. When Dennis puts on the experimental jet suit, he gains the abilities to fly and lift heavy objects.
  • Kid Hero: In his Super Duper Man costume, Dennis performs some heroic deeds, such as stopping a runaway baby carriage, prevent Henry's company's experimental jet from crashing, and arrest the two criminals who sabotaged said jet.
  • Mosquito Miscreants: Just before Dennis shows Mr. Wilson his Super Duper Man costume, Mr. Wilson is seen swatting mosquitoes, complaining how they get bigger each year.
  • Superhero Episode: When Dennis gets an experimental jet suit instead of the Super Duper Man costume he ordered, he gains superpowers and uses them to do heroic deeds.
  • Superman Substitute: Super Duper Man is a clear parody of Superman.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: The company that makes the Super Duper Man costume Dennis ordered accidentally sends Dennis an experimental jet suit, which gives Dennis super powers.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The two criminals flee in their truck after Dennis foils their plan to sabotage Henry's company's experimental jet, but Dennis catches up to them and takes them to jail.

"Ice Show Show Off" provides examples of:

  • Acrofatic: As noted by Jay, Mr. Wilson sure is graceful for someone his size.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mr. Wilson. He lets Dennis hold his ticket to the ice show, and while Dennis is able to get in easily, the manager won't let Mr. Wilson in, refusing to believe his story. Mr. Wilson later tries to sneak into the ice show by hiding in a barrel, only to get roped into an ice skater's stunt, gets sick after getting trapped in a block of ice, and pushed back into the ice show by Dennis, Gina, and Jay.
  • Cargo Concealment Caper: Mr. Wilson takes Dennis to an ice show but makes the mistake of giving his ticket to Dennis. When Mr. Wilson is stopped at the front door of the arena by the manager, he tries to explain the situation to him, but the manager doesn't believe him. To get into the arena, Mr. Wilson hides in a barrel set to go on stage for an ice-skating routine. As the workers take the barrels inside, one of them complains about how heavy one of them is, not knowing Mr. Wilson is inside it. Mr. Wilson later finds out that the ice-skating routine involves a skater jumping over twelve barrels, and when he hears that the skater's blades are razor-sharp, he tries to escape by rolling his barrel but only ends up messing up the skater's routine and getting caught by the manager.
  • Harmless Freezing: Near the end of the episode, Mr. Wilson falls in a hole in the ice and gets frozen in a block of ice. While the manager takes him away, Mr. Wilson is still able to grumble from inside the ice.
  • Literal-Minded: At the end of the episode, Dr. Perkins comes to Mr. Wilson's house to treat a sick Mr. Wilson. When Dennis asks Dr. Perkins if Mr. Wilson is going to be okay, Dr. Perkins tells Dennis to make sure Mr. Wilson gets lots of ice. Upon hearing this, Dennis, Gina, and Jay take Mr. Wilson to the ice show, as there's plenty of ice there.
  • Rake Take: Played with; Mr. Wilson gets hit by his rake when Dennis steps on it.
